7:30pm: Eintracht Frankfurt v Bayern Munich – Half-Time Draw
Bayern play out through their centre halves. They get really high and they stop the central midfielders from dropping too deep to collect the ball. Especially as Robert Lewandowski was best served by players retaining their advanced positions.
But now they can go deeper with Sadio Mane having the pace to go in behind if teams squeeze. I think that’s going to mean a press higher from strikers to force the ball out wide so the switch isn’t on all the time.
Matthias De Ligt really struggled at first when he joined Juventus and I predict some early wobbles here too.
8pm: Lyon v AC Ajaccio – Both Teams to Score: No
Sometimes promotion to Ligue 1 excites fanbases. Ajaccio are not one of those sides – simply because their entire identity is based on being rigid and not conceding goals. To that end, I think they’ll end resembling Nice from a few years ago and be quite tough to break down.
Ajaccio’s 19-goal defensive record last year was the lowest in the last 20 years of the French second tier. You can forget about there being goals galore in this one.
8pm: Crystal Palace v Arsenal – Palace and the Draw
Arsenal have waited so long to replace Patrick Vieira in that number six role that they’re now facing off against him in the opposition dugout. What a revelation.
And this selection isn’t a knock on their business. In fact, I love what they’ve done here. Oleksandr ZInchenko will be a genuinely brilliant player for them – but it’ll take time coming from Pep’s setup where every player is drilled on how he does things to a mish-mash Arsenal unit that sometimes look directionless.
He’ll take time to adapt to central midfield in their 2-3-5 transition and it will cause them teething problems early. Same principle with Gabriel Jesus. People forget that Palace picked up 48 points in the Premier League last year. They’ve only bettered that once in a 38-game season.
8:15pm: Benfica v Arouca – Under 2.5 Goals
The thing about Darwin Nunez is that he didn’t just score goals – he created them for himself as well. I hate the idea that any side are gleefully puppeteered by any single player but in this case, Benfica’s attacking patters kind of were.
They also lost Everton to Flamengo – and certainly not their flamingo to Everton, as well as Jota to Celtic. So where do they stand? They’re in good hands courtesy of David Neres who is going to be lethal in this league.
But good things come to those who wait. They’ll retain their possession-based prowess but that just means a lot of directionless passages before breaking Arouca down. Take the under.
