European football qualifiers are my favourite fixtures in world football. For the simple reason that they help me plan my holidays. Royal Union Saint-Gilloise take on Rangers and let me tell you – there has never been a fixture less likely to attract tourism off the back of a pairing in my life.

Anyway, enough of that. Rangers should be favourites to progress given they made it to the final of a European competition last year, right? You’d think so.

NEW TO PADDY POWER NEWS?

Scotland’s coefficient is higher than Belgium’s too and second spot in the Scottish Premiership should in theory be better than the Jupiler Pro League.

But there’s more at play than a simple formula. Here’s a Bet Builder for the Tuesday night tussle.

Tuesday 7.45pm: Union St Gilloise v Rangers
TV: Premier Sports 1
UEFA Champions League Third Qualifying Round 1st Leg

Saint-Gilloise and the Draw

I don’t like teams travelling for a Tuesday game after playing on a Saturday morning. I’ve long been a believer that, especially on the opening week, you need the full week to recover.

Saint-Gilloise have not only the benefit of being at home and therefore not travelling, but they’ve played two games compared to Rangers’ one thus far.

They’ll be a touch fitter, a touch more relaxed and a touch more likely to want to win this game – given the away rules goal was removed last season. Not before bloody time, too.

Both Teams to Score

Saint-Gilloise are bottom feeders. And I don’t mean that in a traditional sense. They beat the sides that are far worse than them. They had the best defensive record in Belgium last year during the regular season, but fell short when the Championship stage began, conceding in each of their three home games against Antwerp, Club Brugge and Anderlecht.

They have defensive frailties when they can’t dominate possession and they won’t be able to do so here against a side that are technically better than them.

Half Time Result: The Draw

The sides’ opening European game of the season will always produce some level of trepidation and the feeling-out period goes on longer than you’d think.

Playing against a side in a different league to you always comes with a slow start because you’re trying to find the common pace at which the game will be played. I’d expect nothing different here.

James Tavernier to Score

There’s an ongoing joke with this fella that he’s a prolific goalscorer. And look, he’s clearly not – a lot of it is down to set-pieces, but even still, he’s popped up again against Livingston to rescue Rangers.

Given Gio is likely to rotate his forwards again, it’s perhaps a safer bet to go with the safest bet.
