NEW TO PADDY POWER NEWS?

With some of the European leagues getting back into action this weekend we’re looking at two opening games from the Belgian Jupiler League where Standard Liege host Gent and the Austrian Bundesliga where champions RB Salzburg face Austria Vienna. From the Irish Premier Division we’ll also be hunting out some value in the Dundalk v Finn Harps game while UCD entertain Shelbourne at the same time.

7.30pm: RB Salzburg v Austria Vienna – Salzburg to Win to Nil

Following yet another successful campaign in Austria’s Bundesliga, RB Salzburg will again feature in this season’s Champions League after winning 25, drawing five and losing just two of their 32 league games last season. Austria Vienna finished a fair bit off the pace, finishing fifth on just 25 points. The defending champions got their domestic season off to a 3-0 away win over Fugen in the Austrian Cup a week ago, losing a friendly to Ajax midweek.

The hosts have beaten the travelling side in Salzburg in all eight of their most recent visits westward and only managed to score in three of those games. Salzburg have won four and drawn one of their five most recent competitive games while on home soil share the same record, scoring a mammoth 15 goals while conceding just two.

Vienna also won their opening Cup game, a 0-7 thumping of Wels and over their last five competitive games have won three and drawn two. Their away league form has seen them winning one, drawing two and losing two, scoring four and conceding nine. The hosts put five past them with no answer last April here and with their terrible record at the RB Arena we’re getting some great value here on Salzburg to Win to Nil.

7.45pm: Standard Liege v Gent – Gent to Win

TV: Mola TV

Standard had a very disappointing campaign last season finishing way down in 14th position while Genk qualified for this season’s Europa League with a fifth-place finish. The hosts failed to win any of their pre-season friendlies, losing two and drawing one and finished last season with just one win over their last five competitive games, drawing one and losing three. At the Stade Maurice Dufrasne they share the same results, scoring four goals while conceding six.

Gent played a ton of pre-season games where they won three, drew one and lost two. Competitively they won four of their last five in the league, losing the other one while on their away jaunts they won three, drew one and lost their opening game of the season in a 1-0 loss away to Brugge in the Super Cup.

The away side will come into this match far more match-fit than their opponents and have won this fixture in three of their last five visits there. Standard’s goal stats are terrible too while the away side have scored nine over their last five on their travels. The value is in backing Gent to Win here.

7.45pm: Dundalk v Finn Harps – Dundalk Win & Over 2.5 Goals

Dundalk are short-odds to take the three points here and it’s easy to see why. Finn Harps have won just one of their last 15 Premier Division fixtures and have only beaten Dundalk away from home in one of their last 10 visits there. The hosts have won two, drawn two and lost one of their last five fixtures in the league but on home turf have now won eight on the bounce, scoring 12 over their last five while conceding just two.

The visitors have lost four and drawn one of their last five league encounters, drawing the other and share the same record on their league travels, scoring five and conceding 14. Dundalk could run riot here against that leaky defence. As such, we’re backing Dundalk to Win & Over 2.5 Goals, a bet that would have landed in five of their last seven home clashes.

7.45pm: UCD v Shelbourne – Under 2.5 Goals

UCD finally put the brakes on a terrible run of form that saw them going winless for eight games in a row by beating Sligo Rovers away from home last weekend. Shels had also endured a bad run of results of late, failing to win over their last four games before beating Finn Harps at home. The Students have won one and lost four of their last five in the league while at home have drawn two and lost three, scoring four goals while shipping 10.

Shelbourne have won one, drawn one and lost three over their last five in the league while on their travels have won one and lost four, scoring three goals while conceding eight. Under 2.5 Goals has landed in four of their last five competitive meetings here and with both teams struggling to hit barn doors we’re backing that trend to continue.
