It’s the first quarter final’s of this Summers Euros and Spain will certainly prove to be England’s stiffest test so far. England cruised through the group stages with 3 wins, 14 goals scored and 0 goals conceded. Hopefully the Lionesses can continue that good form, and I’ve a bet-builder at over 20/1 which will hopefully make the victory that bit sweeter!
NEW TO PADDY POWER NEWS?
Spain were also expected to top their group but the loss of star player Alexis Puetellas through injury has hampered their attacking threat. They have kept the ball and possession very well in the group stages but have lacked that clinical edge in front of goal, which ultimately cost them in their 2-0 defeat to Germany, leaving them to qualify as runners up in Group B. Spain saw out Group B with the narrowest victories against Denmark, with 17 attempts, 9 corners and over 65% of the possession. It wasn’t until injury time that Marta Cardona could bundle the ball home for a 1-0 win.

England to win
England have all the momentum coming out of the group stages with the best record in the competition. They haven’t been tested against top quality opponents yet, but that have comfortably dispatched the teams in front of them.
Couple this with the home crowd at the Brighton & Hove Community Stadium, who will vociferous in their support for the Lionesses, and Sarina Wiegman’s side will be tough to beat.
They’re currently the favourites to go all the way and lift the trophy at Wembley in our Euro 2022 outright markets, and as such are strong favourites for Wednesday night’s quarter final.
Under 2.5 goals
Despite being the competitions highest scorers, I think England will win this one narrowly, with one or two goals to nil. As mentioned, Spain have struggled to break teams down, and England are yet to concede this tournament – which means I can’t really see the Spanish being too much a threat to the Lionesses’ perfect defensive record.
Spain have remained relatively difficult to break down themselves, keeping a clean sheet when needing to not lose their final group game against Denmark to progress, and have conceded an average of one a game. The Germany side that put four past Finland, and three past Denmark could only manage a couple of goals against the Spaniards.

Beth Mead to have 1+ shot on target
Finally I’m going with Beth Mead to have 1 or more shots on target. The Arsenal forward leads the goalscoring charts with 5 goals in the group stages, having scored in every one. She’s played 90 minutes twice and is better value in the shot on target market than other forwards such as White & Russio who may be rotated, and not play the full match. Expect Mead to have a couple shots and even if she doesn’t score, we just need her to hit the target to hopefully get this bet-builder over the line!
Spain to take 7+ corners
Spain have taken 32 corners in their opening 3 games, and I’m backing them to have at least 7 against England. They have lots of possession, and can get the ball into the final 3rd, they utilise their wide players and will have plenty of chances to whip the ball into the area or cut it back from the byeline. If England take the lead, they will sit back and invite pressure from Spain & I think Spain could rack up another high corner count in this one.
