One of the pre-tournament favourites, Spain, have arrived at the last game of the group stage against Denmark knowing they must avoid defeat in order to progress to the Euro 2022 quarter-finals.
The loss of the world’s best player Alexia Putellas was felt in Spain’s 2-0 defeat to Germany last time out. Despite dominating possession throughout the game, they had no real cutting edge and struggled to create many clear-cut chances.
WHAT: UEFA Euro 2020 – Group B: Denmark v Spain WHEN: Saturday, July 16: 8pm WHERE: Brentford Community Stadium HOW TO WATCH: BBC Two, iPlayer and BBC Sport Website
I’m expecting this match to take a similar pattern to Spain’s last game, except Denmark won’t pose the same threat that Germany did from counterattacks and set-pieces. I’m predicting a narrow Spain victory.
If they take the lead, they will likely stay conservative and look to see out the draw/win that’ll see them through to the quarter-finals. Expect a tight, low-scoring game with Under 3.5 Goals.
With all the possession they’ve had, Spain have had 23 corners in their opening two matches. And I’m going with them to add to that tally by backing Over 7.5 Spain Corners in this match.
They’ll be utilising tricky winger Sheila Garcia who can get down the right flank, take on defenders, get to the by-line and look to cut the ball back across the area.
Finally, I’m going with the Danes to pick up the most cards. Spain have only had one yellow card in their opening two games whilst Denmark have had three yellows and a red. If chasing the game late on, frustration could get the better of them and I expect them to pick up a few cards.
