Ahh the Scottish League Cup, it seems to come round earlier and earlier every year, doesn’t it? Well, remember the date – the 9th of July 2022 – the day that competitive club football officially returned to the UK.

This Saturday at 3pm we’ve got a smattering of Premiership clubs in action against upstarts from the rest of the Scottish leagues. Buckle up as I run the rule over these games to hopefully bring you a winning wager as we kick off the 2022/23 campaign!

Albion Rovers v Livingston – Livingston (-2)

Livingston finished as the best of a bad bunch in the bottom half of the Premiership after the spilt last term and they head to Albion Rovers who finished 3rd bottom in the Scottish Football League, ending 8th in League Two.

Livingston are the shortest of our featured teams to win here and they should easily live up to that tag. Given the gap in quality I’ll have a go on Livingston (-2) in the handicap markets.

Fraserburgh v Kilmarnock – Kilmarnock (-2)

Highland League side Fraserburgh host Kilmarnock in what will surely be an easy win for the top-flight team. Killy returned to the Premiership after winning the Championship last term and they’ll be looking to get up to speed early doors.

It all spells bad news for The Broch and, even though these games may be played like glorified friendlies, it’s hard to see anything other than a big away win. As such I’ll have a go on the visitors to win by three or more as they pass the Kilmarnock (-2) handicap.

Hibernian v Clyde – Both Teams to Score? No

It’s a Premiership v League One clash next where Clyde head to Hibs. Hibernian had a middling kind of season last term, finishing in the bottom six, but they never had relegation worries. Clyde, for their part, struggled in the 3rd tier and came 3rd bottom.

It looks like another cut and dried victory for the big boys and you could easily side with the Hibs in the handicap markets. However, I’ll take on Both Teams to Score? No. Hibs were pretty good defensively last season and Clyde mustered just over 1 goal per game in League One so it will be something of a shock if they manage to net.

St Mirren v Arbroath – Under 2.5 Goals

St Mirren finished one place and one point below Hibs last term and they welcome Arbroath to their turf with the visors still smarting after their Championship playoff semi final penalty shootout loss to Inverness last term. This looks to be one of the tighter games on offer this weekend

I’m a little reluctant to back the Premiership side to win, given that there’s not lightyears between the two sides and the friendly factor that I mentioned earlier. Instead, I think Under 2.5 Goals is a good play here. Both sides averaged under 2.5 goals per game across last season and, with both getting up to speed, this could be a drab, low-scoring affair.
