This is Northern Ireland’s first time at a major Women’s tournament and they are the lowest-ranked side in it (47th in the world). They did well in qualifying, but I am afraid they will be up against it in a very tough group – particularly in this first match.

Norway are ranked 11th in the world and are the seventh-best ranked side in Europe. They have a couple of the best players in the world right now in Ada Hegerberg and Caroline Graham Hansen.

WHAT: UEFA Euro 2020 – Group A: Norway v Northern Ireland
WHEN: Thursday, July 7: 8pm
WHERE: Southampton – St Mary’s
HOW TO WATCH: BB1, iPlayer

This is an open tournament and the fact that the first six teams in the outright betting are at single figures shows that, but for me I’d be happy to have a look at Norway at double figures to actually win Euro 2022.

I am not saying they are the best team in it but certainly are one of the better value picks in the outright betting market and they should win this game comfortably.

Over 3.5 Goals

Norway are a very short price in Match Odds so the way to get them onside is to back plenty of goals in the match. Norway have played eight World Cup qualifiers since September and have scored an average of 5.1 goals per game. That is correct, 5.1 goals per game!

Whereas Northern Ireland in their last two competitive matches in April lost 3-1 to Austria and 5-0 at home to England. There is a gulf between the two teams playing here and therefore expect to see plenty of goals.

Ada Hegerberg Anytime Assist

Caroline Hansen Anytime Goalscorer

Ada Hegerberg will score plenty of goals as she currently holds the record for most goals in a UEFA Women’s Champions League season (15) and is currently the all-time highest goalscorer in that tournament (59). Caroline Hansen will provide plenty of assists as proven by her 20 in 42 Champions League games over the last six seasons.

However, to get a bigger prices I am going to flip them, and go with Hansen to score and Hegerberg to get an assist. If we are expecting Norway to score a few goals in this game then there is a strong chance we will see these legs happen. Possible that they might even happen on the same goal if Hergerberg sets Hansen up.

Simone Magill to have 1+ Shots

Rachel Furness will probably be the highest profile player on the Northern Ireland team but Simone Magill is likely to be the highest up the field against Norway. For that reason I would side with Magill in picking a player off the underdogs to have at least one shot in the match. The hard working forward has 21 goals in 70 caps since making her debut at 15.

One of those goals was scored against Georgia after just 11 seconds! This means Magill holds the world record for the fastest international goal in women’s football. All we need here though is one shot, doesn’t even have to be on target!
