Some fancy this Iceland side as dark horses to make it out of Group D – upsetting one of the big nations in France or Italy along the way. Recent 2023 World Cup qualifiers have shown how well this side have blended youth and experience, currently sitting top of their group above a very strong Netherlands side.

Manager – Thorsteinn Halldorsson
Thorsteinn Halldorsson is experienced at club level in both the male and female game. He took charge at the start of 2021 and has already led his side to some impressive results. Expect Iceland to set up in a 4-3-3 formation. A very experienced three in midfield provides a solid base and they will prove difficult to break down.
Captain – Sara Bjork Gunnarsdottir
Sara Bjork Gunnarsdottir is the most experienced and arguably most talented in the group. Gunnarsdottir took time away from the game in March 2021 on maternity leave, she has now made a full return and should take her place as part of the midfield trio.
Star Player – Sveindis Jane Jonsdottir
At only 21, Sveindis Jane Jonsdottir has fast become one of the most exciting prospects in the game. Playing at a high level with Wolfsburg, Jonsdottir is only getting better and is already a key player in this Iceland side. The young winger has started all six of the recent World Cup qualifiers – with three goals and two assists to her name.
Iceland are also very dangerous from set pieces and in Jonsdottir they have a long throw specialist, the likes of which hasn’t been seen since the days of Rory Delap.
Best Bet of Tournament – Iceland to beat Belgium
Iceland have only got out of their group in their three previous attempts at the Euros – and if they are to stand any chance in Group D they need to get off to a good start against lowly-ranked Belgium. Iceland were victorious the last time these two sides met, although that was way back in 2016.
