Phil Thompson: Haaland a special signing for City but United flirting with danger

Thommo takes a look at the summer situation in Manchester.

Paddy Power ambassador and Liverpool legend Phil Thompson has been running the rule over his old friends from Manchester, City and United. City have been busy in the transfer market already, signing the exciting striking powerhouse Erling Haaland and reportedly closing in on Leeds’ Kalvin Phillips.

United, on the other hand, have loads of deadwood to shift and don’t appear to be on the brink of any major transfers. In fact, one of the loudest noises coming out of Old Trafford surrounds a potential exit for their top scorer, Cristiano Ronaldo. So, with Liverpool watching on with interest, what’s Thommo’s thoughts on the business going on up the M62?

Erling Haaland looks a special signing

I know Pep’s gone on about not needing a striker but when you look at the quality of Erling Haaland and what he does down the middle, the figures he comes up with are quite extraordinary.

But the question is, does he fit into the pattern of City’s play?

As we’ve seen with other players, the Premier League is a lot different from what they might be used to. The nearest league in terms of style to the Prem, I think, is the Bundesliga.

But to actually come and settle is a different question. We’ll see at the start of the season but at the moment Haaland looks like a special signing.

Man United teetering on the edge of a cliff

It’s a fine balance with Manchester United at the moment because quite obviously there’s a lot of players at the club that are not good enough. They’ve had their chance and they’re not doing it.

They have to look at changing the culture at the club and that’ll be better for certain players but they then have to get the right players in with the right attitude.

They have to have a good, sustainable plan for the long term. Not just looking 12 months down the line, they have to look long term with your players.

So it’s a balancing act and Man United are in a precarious position with their transfer policy. It’s a difficult balance to get.
