Liverpool have been one of the early movers in the summer transfer window, splashing out a potential club-record fee on Uruguayan hot shot Darwin Nunez. With Sadio Mane departing after a trophy-laden six-year spell, the 22-year-old has enormous boots to fill.
We’ve asked Paddy Ambassador and Liverpool legend Phil ‘Thommo’ Thompson for his take on one of the biggest deals of the transfer window so far…

On Darwin Nunez:
I am very excited about Darwin Nunez. We’ve had first hand experience of him when he played Liverpool in the Champions League and he looked a real player, he terrorised our defence. He made fantastic runs in behind and scored in both legs. He could have himself a hat-trick at Anfield.
But again, as I stressed with Haaland, you don’t know till you’ve got them. It’s a change of environment, a change of culture.
Will he fit into what Jurgen Klopp requires? You have to wait and see how he fits in.
I’m excited as every Liverpool fan is. It won’t just be those two games, he will have been on the radar before that. Our scouting system has been second to none in the last couple of years and they’ll have looked long and hard at him.
Besides Darwin, we’ve signed Fabio Carvalho from Fulham. 19 years of age, he’s a real talent. And full-back Calvin Ramsay from Aberdeen has been a decent addition. So that’s a 22 year-old and two very young lads, 18 and 19, and that’ll take Liverpool through the next couple of years.
