Former England and Liverpool defender Phil Thompson is back in our starting XI for this weekend’s Nations League fixtures. Here, the Paddy Power ambassador runs the rule over the side he represented, England, taking on the nation that won Euro 2020, Italy.
WELCOME TO PADDY POWER NEWS!
Will Gareth Southgate’s gang get a little bit of revenge for that penalty shootout loss or will Italy emerge victorious once again? England are the big favourites here but the Azzurri are fearsome on their day. Who’s coming out on top? Here’s Thommo’s England v Italy tips.

England’s 1-1 draw with Germany was a good result in the end but I thought, particularly in the second half, we lost our way a little bit. There looked a lot of tired legs out there, we lost our shape a little bit.
I must admit when Jack Grealish came on he changed things. He looked, like he was with Aston Villa, like it was just, ‘give me the ball’. He was massive, I do hope he plays. I think that would be positive for England.
I thought we got away with one, I thought Germany were far better, far quicker and fitter. Harry Kane scored and the Manuel Neuer save – I thought it was Thibaut Courtois in the Champions League final all over again!
I think there will be people rested for this game and a big question is, will Harry Kane play? It’s a toss up, isn’t it, as a manager? Do you go with Harry Kane to start this one against Italy or start him against Hungary?
I think he’s one of those players who’s better for the more games he plays. I was toying between Kane to be my goal scorer in this one or Tammy Abraham. Obviously you need to check the team sheets but I think either or the other will play.
I do think England, because of what happened in that final in the Euros, I’m expecting England to Win this. It’s going to be tight, I’m going for England to win this 2-1.
If Kane doesn’t start I’d look at Tammy Abraham to Score Anytime. He knows a lot about the Italians and how they play, after having such a successful season over in Roma. I’d expect him to be on the scoresheet if Kane doesn’t start.
