Don’t be a cynic. Don’t be a cynic. Don’t be a cynic. Don’t be a cynic. Don’t be a cynic.
Well, that was a load of pox, wasn’t it?
I truly understand it’s 30-degree heat and I know all about Expected Goals – but we’re a nation that generally spend a fortnight a year in Marbella by choice and who’ve had more hard luck stories than good days out.
Stephen Kenny’s side are more than capable of putting together good-looking performances, but still lack that instinct in front of goal that flashed its head in Azerbaijan on a consistent basis.
He had the ambition of topping the group but that now seems half a world away given they’ve been done in by the supposed weak link of the entire group.
But I do enjoy quick turnarounds for sides that have underperformed. They might not have created enough to win the game, but they will feel aggrieved due to the way it ended.
Bouncing back is an awful phrase; typically when a team goes into a month-long lull.
However, with so many games in quick succession, they’re likely to come away with a group of results that more accurately reflect where they are. Starting here.
Maybe I seem mad, but the emotionally-charged Ukrainians are likely deflated after what was both a masterclass in harnessing energy against Scotland and deflating considerably due to same after the defeat to Wales.
Football truly isn’t important in that context, but with World Cup qualification being as big as a distraction as they could want and it being a chance to make a wider statement for their country, it felt like everything went into that occasion.
No matter how big representing your country is, there’ll be a notable comedown to a game in Dublin where the fanbase is both empathetic and not fully committed after the previous game.
The thing about a striker is they get the brunt of the blame when they miss chances, but none of Callum’s efforts were really of a high conversion probability.
I’d sooner look at Troy Parrott’s lack of involvement than Robinson’s failure to convert. His runs off the shoulders of centre halves looked as good as they ever have. He’ll score.
Ireland being done on the break is one thing against a team like Armenia who were always likely to need to carry the ball in order to score.
But I think the world’s renewed focus on Ukraine actually made them aware of how much quality they have in midfield areas. They have a final pass as soon as space opens up and I think Ireland will succumb to that when they inevitably go to score more instead of sitting in.
Their first half in Yerevan was considerably better than the second. Their intent from the off is comfortably their best trait under Kenny and I’d expect that to continue here at home in front of a tetchy crowd.
