Burnley decided to sack Sean Dyche this year after a decade in charge at Turf Moor, with the Clarets appointing Mike Jackson as the interim manager.
However, Burnley didn’t have enough to stay up, with Leeds’ last-day win at Brentford securing their Premier League status for next season – and sending Burnley to the second tier.
WELCOME TO PADDY POWER NEWS!
So, after axing Dyche and being relegated to the Championship, who’s going to lead Burnley in their next chapter?
Paddy’s trusty traders are here to help you separate the wheat from the chaff and they’ve priced up the runners and riders as to who might be the Next Burnley Manager.
Vincent Kompany
The former Manchester City captain has been cutting his teeth in his homeland Belgium in charge at Anderlecht, with mixed results. Despite that indifferent spell he looks to be a contender for the Clarets top job.
Joey Barton
Fresh off a miracle promotion out of League Two with Bristol Rovers, could the ‘fiery’ former midfielder be headed for the new Championship side? Barton has previous with Burnley, having twice been signed by Dyche.
Wayne Rooney
Wayne Rooney’s Derby future is up in the air. The former Manchester United forward is keen to stay if they find a buyer for the club, which will be in League One next season after their relegation was confirmed. But it could be a hard proposition for Rooney to turn down if Burnley come calling.
Chris Wilder
Former Sheffield United manager and current Middlesbrough boss Chris Wilder is towards the top of the betting to replace Dyche. The 54-year-old would be a solid appointment given his success at Championship and Premier League level. Wilder has refused to rule out heading to Turf Moor too…
Sam Allardyce
We can all agree that football is better with Big Sam in it. Allardyce has been out of work since leaving West Brom last year and his name always crops up when a manager is sacked. His football philosophy is similar to Dyche’s – and Mike Bassett’s – and despite being an ex-Blackburn man could fit the bill.
Duncan Ferguson
Duncan Ferguson falls into the no-messing style of managers alongside Wilder and Allardyce but Big Dunc is the scariest of the lot. The Everton coach is desperate to be a No.1 somewhere with the Toffees overlooking him every time they axe their boss. Pray for those Burnley boys if Dunc’s in charge for pre-season.
Nuno Espirito Santo
Nuno Espirito Santo was sacked by Tottenham last year but he did a fine job at Wolves prior to his north London nightmare. Nuno was shrewd in the transfer market and that will be needed given his summer budget will be around £50 and a ticket to the pub raffle at Turf Moor.
Kjetil Knutsen
Who is Kjetil Knutsen I hear you ask? He’s the current manager of Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt. They’ve had some superb wins this season in Europe, including two victories against Celtic and a couple over Jose Mourinho’s Roma. It would be a bold appointment for the usually safe Burnley but it could pay off.
