I expect Man City to pick themselves up for Newcastle after that Madrid letdown – I mean, they don’t want to finish the season with nothing, do they?
That could happen if they have a hangover from the Champions League exit because you just can’t see Liverpool losing. A game of that magnitude could be devastating for them and their season.
But City are too professional for that. My gut feeling is they react very positively and they can get a comfortable win on Sunday.
I’ve been impressed with Newcastle since Eddie Howe came in. I was there for the Liverpool game and Newcastle did put it up to them, though you always thought the visitors would come out on top.
They’re a lot tighter defensively and the new signings have slotted in well straight away.
Manchester City v Newcastle Sunday, May 8: 4.30pm
Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Premier League
The issue is goals. They can keep it tight – they kept Liverpool to 1-0 – but scoring is a different story. When Allan Saint-Maximin isn’t on it they’ll struggle. Chris Wood hasn’t really been firing, so I can’t really see them troubling Man City.
On the other hand, City can get them from anywhere, they’ve so many good players. I thought Jack Grealish looked sharp when he came on in Madrid and might be due a start. He’s a good bet for a goal or assist.
Obviously Riyad Mahrez scored the other night too and he’s always a threat as well, so you’d expect him to really trouble Newcastle.
