Whether we know it or not, we tend to not factor relegation into our end-of-season psyche unless it includes a team we’re conditioned to expect to be in the top tier.
It’s not quite snobbery, but it is reflective of the chasm between the top table and the rest of the division – even forgetting the differences between the Premier League and those aiming to get there.
Teams can achieve this recognition in multiple ways, but perhaps the best thing about Everton and Burnley is that they’ve done so in incredibly different ways.
Wednesday 7:30pm: Everton v Burnley Sky Sports Main Event/Sky Sports Premier League
The Toffees are one of just six teams to have never experienced the drop from the Premier League, while Burney are almost unanimously chosen to return to the second tier every year, yet consistently defy it.
This game won’t decide which of the two goes down, but it will certainly act as a means to explore the psychology of it. Is it better to be battle-hardened and used to the pressure that comes with these situations, or does it pay to have the higher-quality squad?
It feels like a rare, rare fixture that can be used as an example of a unique circumstance like this, and big games require big wins. For us, to be clear – I’m not sure either of these are capable.
I don’t truly believe there’s an urgency from either of these teams yet. There’s a real sense that the teams around them are considerably worse and I wouldn’t be surprised if there came a point in this game where stringing passes together became a task and the tempo died.
A point here is not the end of the world for either, and the fact Burnley are at home only really ties into that. The perception that getting a point off Everton in their current state is a good thing seems folly, but I believe Sean Dyche would take it because they’ve been here before.
The key is that these are games in hand. Both these teams have three games in hand over Leeds and that subconscious comfort will make this game far less intense than some will expect.
Particularly as neither have shown any sort of attacking prowess in the last while.
Burnley haven’t scored in either of their last four Premier League games. Their goal prior to that was an own goal, and Ben Mee scored from a typical Ben Mee situation for their goal prior to that. Everton? A 99th-minute winner against Newcastle and a wickedly-deflected Mason Holgate strike against West Ham are all that separates now from their four-game goalless streak again.
In a game where neither feel the need to seize the points, I’d suspect the lack of urgency will result in a lot of wanting in front of goal.
If this game finds action, it’ll be the latter stages – and I can’t conceive a situation whereby Everton or Burnley are keen to get a move on with things.
The only real motivation you could imagine for Everton is from their manager, but he’s publicly hanging them week in, week out. So I’d expect them to be quite timid.

Woug Weghorst to Score Anytime
With Michael Keane out suspended, on top of the fact that their players aren’t up for a battle, a Chris Wood masterclass would be due around now.
Luckily, Burnley have fairly much replaced like for like with Weghorst and he’ll be the most likely contender to find the net in this one.
