Scotland are the opposition for Poland on Thursday night, as the Poles begin their preparations for a massive world cup qualifying decider on Tuesday night. They’ll face the winner of Sweden v Czech Republic in a winner-takes-all tie for one of final remaining places for the 2022 World Cup. For Scotland, the Polish game is another chance for manager Steve Clarke to take a look at his options as the Scots also look towards World Cup qualification – but as yet they don’t have a date for their rearranged game against Ukraine.

Thursday 7.45pm: Scotland v Poland
TV: Sky Sports Football

Both Teams to score

You have to go back to September 1st for the last time the Scots failed to score, and that was away to Denmark. In their following six games, they’ve knocked in 10 goals. In fact, the last time they didn’t score at Hampden Park was in October 2020 – they’ve scored in each of their seven home games since then.

Poland, with their attack spearheaded by world-class talent Robert Lewandowski, are also a good shout to score – they last failed to do so fifteen games ago. Granted, in that time they’ve put twelve goals past San Marino, but they’ve also played England twice as well. If past form is anything to go by, this game has goals in it.

Lewandowski to score anytime

He’s Poland’s all-time record goalscorer. He’s got 45 goals in 37 games this season. In the six Poland games Lewandowski has played in since the Euros, he’s bagged five goals. Surely the Bayern Munich forward will find a way past Hearts’ Craig Gordon? In his last visit to Hampden (back in 2015), Lewandowski scored twice. It really is incredible to think he nearly ended up playing for Sam Allardyce at Blackburn Rovers! Nevertheless we’re backing him to score on Thursday night.

Robertson to assist anytime

Playing as a wing-back in Steve Clarke’s favoured back five formation, Robertson has plenty of license to get forward on the counter attack. The Scottish captain also takes some set-pieces for his side. Wojciech Szczęsny is in between the sticks for Poland, and his side don’t have the best defensive record. Since the Euros, they’ve only kept two clean sheets, and have conceded goals to lowly Andorra and San Marino. If they can find a way through, then so can Scotland, and we’re backing Liverpool ace Robertson to be the provider.

Match Result: Draw

Its going to be tough to separate these two teams, Scotland won’t want to dent their six-match unbeaten record, and Poland won’t want to go into their crucial World Cup qualifying match on Tuesday off the back of a loss. Hampden Park is a difficult place to go, and there will be plenty of Scottish fans in attendance. With all of this in mind, we think this one will end in a goal-scoring draw.
