It’s February and that only means one thing: the Champions League knockout stages are here! The opening week sees some tasty matchups including Austrian side RB Salzburg taking on six-time winners and perennial German Champions Bayern Munich. Julian Nagelsmann’s side are one of our favourites to lift the trophy in May and will be expecting to reach the quarter-finals for the 10th time in 11 seasons.
Paddy Power’s top ambassador Phil Thompson is predicting the German giants to make light work of the Austrian champions despite their shock 4-2 Bundesliga defeat to Bochum last weekend.
RB Salzburg v Bayern Munich: Champions League Last 16, first-leg Wednesday, February 16: 8pm BT Sport 3
THOMMO: Bayern had a real surprise defeat to VfL Bochum, 4-2 on Saturday.
Robert Lewandowski still got two goals, the absolute goal machine he is, but they conceded three goals in six minutes before half time which was absolutely astonishing.
Sometimes these things happen, as we remember from the 2005 Champions League final, Liverpool scoring three in six minutes, it happens!
They are sitting top of the league, six points ahead of Dortmund but they’ve lost four games in the Bundesliga this season. I think people will have gone ‘wow’ thinking that defeat against Bochum was their first defeat this season but no, they’ve lost four now.
But I still can’t see Red Bull Salzburg getting anything.
They did win at the weekend, 2-1, away from home against Rapid Vienna and they’re top of the league by 14 points after 19 games.
Also, they’ve only conceded 13 goals in 19 games, that’s not bad. That says they can defend but I don’t think against a team like Bayern Munich.
So I’m going for a resounding 3-0 victory for Bayern.
