The Champions League has reached the business end of the tournament and Europe’s finest will now have one eye on lifting the trophy in St Petersburg’s Gazprom Arena. With the group stages having given us a solid indication of who’s who and what’s what this year, it’s about time to predict who will be tasting glory come May.
Can Pep Guardiola finally guide Manchester City to Champions League success after so many near misses or will Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and co. deliver PSG the European crown they’ve been craving for so long?
WELCOME TO PADDY POWER NEWS
Paddy Power’s top ambassador Phil Thompson assesses the credentials of Europe’s heavyweights and gives his pick for the tournament’s overall winner.
THOMMO: PSG and Real Madrid going at it is a brilliant tie, but I still think the English clubs will rightly top the betting.
Are Real still that frightening team from a few years back?
I don’t believe so, I think the English teams have got them.
PSG along with Manchester City and both are desperate to win the Champions League sooner rather than later.
I think Pep Guardiola will save some of his City players for this tournament. They sit favourites and if you look at what they are doing in the Premier League – which everyone in Europe keeps a firm eye on – see them going well with Liverpool trying to cling on.
This City squad is a really top outfit.
The English teams are so strong now as we’ve seen over the last couple of years and I think they still are.
City are sitting favourites. They’re yet to win it which gives them that hunger for it but looking beyond that, I just think Bayern Munich are really strong.
I know they’ve just conceded four last weekend but defensively I think they’re great and upfront they’ve got so many avenues for scoring goals.
Bayern Munich are my fancy to win the whole thing come the end of the season.
