Because seven games on Boxing Day just isn’t enough, Phil Thompson is back once more to give you a tip or three for Monday night’s game. Struggling Newcastle host Manchester United at 8pm in what should be a blood and thunder encounter.
HELLO FROM PADDY POWER NEWS!
The Toon Army are probably more excited about the transfer window opening than Christmas or this game, but it’s another day ticked off on their special advent calendar which counts down to January 1st. United have steadied the ship and are looking to build under Ralf Rangnick following two 1-0 Premier League wins.
This looks straightforward for United, but does Thommo think they’ll cruise it? Here’s his Newcastle v Manchester United tips.
Monday 8pm: Newcastle v Manchester United
TV: Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Premier League
Newcastle need something. This side just looks so vulnerable. Man City can do it to anybody and take them apart just like they did last weekend, but they’ve conceded 11 goals in their last three Premier League games.
Cristiano Ronaldo will be rubbing his hands with joy at that, Marcus Rashford maybe and Jadon Sancho as well. No matter whether Newcastle go with a three or a five at the back, they always look as though they will concede.
They’ll be up for it but Manchester United have not played since that 1-0 away win at Norwich on the 11th of December so they should be fresh. We’re looking at a Newcastle side who have lost their last three, they’ve won only one of 17, the worst defence in the Premier League, letting in 41 goals for goodness sake!
What do we know about Ralf Rangnick so far? Well, two 1-0 victories, I think he’ll take that but he needs to be a bit more adventurous which they will be in this game. I am going to go for a Manchester United win.
I do fancy Both Teams To Score because Manchester United still give up loads of chances to the opposition. I know he’s not been great this year but I am going for Bruno Fernandes to Score Anytime. I think he’s got to come good and I fancy that.
Newcastle give you loads of opportunities, they get back behind the ball which will open itself up for shots from outside the box and I think Bruno will have a chance from range.
