Wednesday sees the conclusion of this season’s Champions League group stages and, well, there’s not a huge amount left to sort out. Group G is where the main action is at with all four sides still in the hunt to go through.
Both of the English sides in action tonight are into the last 16 with Manchester United already confirmed as winners of Group F. Chelsea have an early start and know a win would see them enjoying an identical fate.
No disrespect Chelsea fans but we’re not interested in you on Wednesday. Nothing personal, I’ll just be trawling through the best of the bets about in Wednesday’s 8pm Champions League kick offs for a fab four-fold hopefully packed full of winning value.
We’ll kick off with one of the games with something riding on it in the stylish shape of Atalanta v Villarreal. Neither of these two can topple Manchester United at the summit of Group F as The Yellow Submarine have an inferior head to head and Atalanta are four points behind.
All that matters for these two is securing 2nd spot. The Serie A entertainers trail Unai Emery’s cheery crew by a point. If you’ve got a passing knowledge of Atalanta you probably won’t be surprised to learn they’ve both scored and conceded 10 goals in just five Champions League games.
Villarreal aren’t much more reserved, they’ve scored nine and shipped seven. All things considered, this should be a cracking winner-takes-all clash. The home side are in superb form (no losses in 10) and I think they’ll triumph here. You can absolutely guarantee goals when they play so I think Atalanta to Win and Over 2.5 Goals is a very solid selection.
German giants Bayern have been perfect so far in the Champions League and they’ll be looking to make it six wins from six against fallen giants Barcelona. Bayern thumped the Catalans on their own patch 3-0 in front of a depressingly low, if Covid-affected crowd, back in September in matchday one.
It set the tone for what was to come and Barcelona could be crashing out and heading in the Europa League. Benfica in 3rd trail them by two points and take on group whipping boys Dynamo Kyiv in their final group match with the head-to-head rights safely in their back pocket.
Frankly it feels impossible to see this Barcelona side, who lost last time to Betis and sit 7th (SEVENTH!) in La Liga, stopping Bayern. It could be another thumping, in fact, I think it will be. At decent odds I’ll side with Bayern to Win and Over 2.5 Goals.
Manchester United are safely through to the knockouts as Group F winners while Young Boys still have a chance of finishing 3rd and heading into the Europa League. Based on recent form it’s a very slim chance, though.
The lads from Bern have won just one of their last eight, losing five and drawing two. If they’re struggling in the Swiss league then the mighty Manchester United should make mincemeat of them. Paddy knows this so there’s no point backing United simply to win at the current prices. Instead I’ll go with Over 3.5 Goals.
It’s landed in two of Young Boys’ last three Champions League matches and, with United’s players looking to impress their new manager and the freedom of no pressure, they could run riot. Remember, this is Manchester United and they always have the capacity to concede as well which will help us along.
Wolfsburg have been in pathetic form of late. They’re down in 8th in the Bundesliga and have won just two of their last 10 in all competitions, drawing two and losing six. Lille have been going far better over in Ligue 1 and have lost just one of their last 10 in all competitions, winning four and drawing the other five.
Lille sit top of Group G but are just three points clear of Wolfsburg in 4th. Everyone has a live chance going into this one and it should be a tasty couple of games. The German side are Paddy’s favourites but I simply cannot get on board with that.
I’ll be siding with the Lille Win here. Their form is far superior to their opponents’ and they’ve been playing better in this competition as well. With the pressure on in this game it should be tight, but I think Lille will have enough to win and progress.
