RB Leipzig’s hopes of progressing to the next round of the Champions League may be over, but they are still locked in a battle for the Europa League spot that third place in Group A provides with Club Brugge. However, the bad news for the German outfit is they host a Man City outfit on Tuesday who look utterly unstoppable of late.
City come into the game in ominous form, winning their last seven games in-a-row in all competitions and they’ve already beaten Leipzig 6-3 earlier this season. So, to in order to get some top tips for this game we’ve turned to three-time European Cup winner and Paddy Power ambassador Phil Thompson. As always, Thommo is not afraid to call it as he sees in and he is picking Pep Guardiola’s men to do the double over their hosts. Check out the rest of his plays for Tuesday’s tie below:
I see this Champions League tie boiling down to a relatively easy win for Manchester City away at RB Leipzig. City have already qualified and with 12 points now, they have secured top spot from PSG – who sit four points behind them.
PSG remain the only team to beat Pep Guardiola’s side in the Champions League this season. But, this game is interesting as Leipzig are having a bit of struggle of late. After qualifying for the Champions League last term, they are now sitting in 11th position in the Bundesliga and they were beaten 2-1 away from home by Union Berlin last weekend.
Things really aren’t going too well for the Germans, and this is a City team who are rampant at this moment in time. I’d expect Guardiola to make changes, but there is an array of talent in the Manchester City squad.
We’ve seen Kevin De Bruyne only be used a sub against Watford in the Premier League last weekend and he’ll probably play here in an attempt to get him back to full fitness. But, Leipzig need to get something to try a grab a Europa League spot, and they are going to be trying their best to get it. However, I don’t believe they will have enough. They just don’t have the firepower to hurt a City outfit who defend so well.
But, because of the likely changes to the Man City line-up, I reckon both teams will score. I also fancy City to win this match by two clear goals, so don’t be surprised if the correct score is 3-1 to them. I do believe Riyad Mahrez will play in this match and this kind of occasion suits him down to the ground, so I’m pick him to score anytime.
