Welcome to the Wednesday hinterland where we’re not sure if it’s still the international break or if we’re throwing ourselves into another packed weekend of action. Both are probably true but, as always, football endures and there’s still some pretty decent stuff happening across the globe while simultaneously nothing is happening at all.
To prove the point we’ve got some prime-time FA Cup action, a mouth-watering Women’s Champions League clash and some Brazilian action between two giants of the South American game. So, buckle up, here’s a tasty treble for you to ponder on Wednesday night.
National League side Stockport take on their near-neighbours in the shape of League One’s Bolton Wanderers in a televised FA Cup first round replay to kick us off. Both sides are 11th in their respective leagues and meet again following a 2-2 draw two weekends ago.
Bolton had been in slightly shaky form but they’re getting back to their best and beat Crewe 2-0 last time out. There are 48 places between the two and, after dominating the original game, I’m backing Bolton to make light work of their opponents here and to pass the Bolton (-1) handicap within the 90 minutes.
Next up is the return leg between Bayern and Lyon as we pass the halfway stage in the Women’s Champions League group stages. The French side beat their German opponents 2-1 last time out in a game that took place just seven days ago.
That win maintained Lyon’s 100% record in the competition so far and means they’re five points clear of 2nd placed Bayern. The away side can secure their passage to the knockouts here and, with the return of the great Ada Hegerberg to the scoresheet at the weekend, you have to be on the Lyon Win here.
Off to the footballing madhouse that is South America for our final leg where 3rd placed Palmeiras host Sao Paulo in a local derby in the Brazilian Serie A. Wednesday’s home side had won six on the bounce before an away-day defeat to Fluminense last time out.
Over the same timeframe Sao Paulo have won two, drawn two and lost three. Palmeiras had been in poor form before that impressive run but with the season nearing its end it’s clear they are the superior side. With home advantage, the better squad and fine form, we have to be on Palmeiras to Win at a very nice price, all things considered.
