We’ve a weird old Wednesday on the cards this week. Far from the glitz and glamour of the Champions League seven days ago we’re in the footballing hinterland between the end of the Premier League weekend and the start of another international break. They’re really sneaking them through now, aren’t they.

But, football being football, there’s plenty of football on. Good old football. On Wednesday we’ve got some Papa John’s Trophy games to whet the appetite as well as women’s Champions League and plenty of games from across the globe. So, let’s see what we can find for a midweek wager.

7pm: Exeter v Bristol Rovers – Over 2.5 Goals
We kick off in the EFL Trophy and a Westcountry derby as Bristol Rovers head to Exeter. Given the rotation that we get in this competition it’s well worth disregarding league form and concentrating on the results in the Papa John’s so far.
As it goes we’ve got The Pirates one spot ahead of The Grecians in 2nd with the two sides separated by just one goal with the pair having three points from their two games. In their combined four games there have been 11 goals, an average of 2.75 goals per game. I think we’ll see Both Teams to Score but at bigger odds I’ll side with Over 2.5 Goals.
7pm: Walsall v Forest Green Rovers – Walsall to Win
Using the same principle in our next match as Group L leaders Walsall host Forest Green. FGR are down in 3rd, two points off the Saddlers who have five from their first two. For the uninitiated, it’s worth pointing out that if the game ends in a draw it goes straight to penalties and the winner gets an extra point.
Anyway, the hosts here have beaten Brighton’s Under 21s and drawn with Northampton while Rovers have drawn against both of those opponents. Walsall’s price here is based on League Two performance but this a completely different kettle of fish. At the price, and with those results taken into consideration, I think it’s well worth siding with the Walsall Win.
7pm: Wigan v Shrewsbury – Shrewsbury Win/Draw Double Chance
To our final pizza cup game and an all League One encounter where Shrewsbury travel to Wigan. The Latics are flying in the league while Town are down in 21st. As such, Wigan are massive favourites here but, looking at the two sides’ efforts in this competition, that’s well wide of the mark.
The Shrews are 2nd in Group C with Wigan rock bottom with just one point. It’s pretty clear which side is taking this competition more seriously and I think Wigan might not be devastated by a group-stage exit. If you’re feeling brave you can side with the away win at a very juicy price but for acca purposes I’m going with Shrewsbury Win and Draw Double Chance.
8pm: Lyon Women v Bayern Munich Women – Lyon Win & Over 2.5 Goals
And now for something completely different as we zoom off to a heavyweight clash in the women’s Champions League where Lyon host Bayern Munich. These two look nailed on to qualify and sit 1st and 2nd in Group D. Lyon have won two out of two, scoring eight and conceding none in the process.
Bayern slipped up against Benfica last time and have won one and drawn one, scoring four and conceding none. Given that Lyon beat Benfica 5-0 and Bayern could only muster a goalless draw we’re looking for value with a home victory. Despite the Germans’ stalemate last time I think it’s worth bolting on Over 2.5 Goals. Whether the hosts score them all or not remains to be seen but I fancy Lyon to Win and Over 2.5 Goals.
