Aston Villa are on the lookout for Dean Smith’s replacement after deciding to axe the 50-year-old heading into the international break. Smith guided Villa from the Championship to consecutive seasons in the Premier League, however, the Midlands club struggled this campaign.

NEW TO PADDY POWER?

Smith lost his last five Premier League games before being given the boot but who could replace him at Villa Park? Here at Paddy Power we have gathered together the most likely options for the Next Aston Villa manager.

Steven Gerrard Rangers Celtic Scottish Premiership January 4, 2020

Steven Gerrard

Steven Gerrard will obviously manage Liverpool in the future but what better way to prove you’re ready than impressing at another Premier League club. The Rangers boss has done a brilliant job north of the border but could he be tempted to head to the Midlands?

John Terry

John Terry knows the club after retiring at Villa and going into a coaching role alongside Smith. The Chelsea legend left Villa Park earlier this year and he’s been open about his desire to be a head coach rather than an assistant. Now could be the time for JT.

Kasper Hjulmand

Denmark boss Kasper Hjulmand is said to be on Villa’s list of potential next managers following Smith’s sacking. Hjulmand, 49, guided Denmark to the Euro 2020 semi-finals and they’re also dominating their World Cup qualifying group. He could be a shrewd appointment for Villa.

Frank Lampard Chelsea Rennes Champions League November 4, 2020

Paulo Fonseca

Ex-Roma boss Paulo Fonseca was tipped to join Tottenham in the summer, while then being backed to replace Steve Bruce at Newcastle. He won three domestic doubles at Shakhtar Donetsk and impressed in Serie A so will it be third time lucky for Fonseca in landing a Premier League job?

Graham Potter

Brighton’s Graham Potter is regarded as arguably the best British manager in the Premier League. Potter’s Brighton created a boatload of chances last season but failed to convert most of them, but things have changed this time round. Could Potter swap his project at Brighton for one at Villa?

Frank Lampard

Frank Lampard did a decent job at Chelsea before splashing the cash and failing to deliver with his big-money stars. You feel Villa’s squad are a similar mould to when he took over at Stamford Bridge. It could be a nice little project for our Frank.

NunoEspiritoSantoTottenhamAug21

Nuno Espirito Santo

Nuno Espirito Santo was axed by Tottenham just weeks ago but if you ignore a disaster three months at Tottenham, the Portuguese did a solid job at Villa’s rivals Wolves. Whether his style of play would be welcome at Villa Park is another question.

Scott Parker

Scott Parker‘s Bournemouth are flying in the Championship this season after the former midfielder quit Fulham to head to the south coast. Parker’s tenure at Fulham in the Premier League didn’t quite to go plan but is he ready for another crack with the big boys?

Thierry Henry

Thierry Henry was widely expected to become Aston Villa manager in 2018 following Steve Bruce’s sacking. The deal didn’t happen and Henry has since managed Monaco and MLS side Montreal Impact, while also assessing Roberto Martinez with the Belgium national team. Henry’s stock hasn’t exactly risen since taking those roles so it could be a risky appointment for Villa.
