English football is funny. The term ‘derby’ is thrown around probably a tad too much for a country that size, and it’s maybe best seen by the fact Brighton and Crystal Palace don’t like each other because there’s a motorway connecting their localities.
I understand you need to hype some games, but if we’re going by the loose logic shown in some parts, then I think England has more derbies per square miles than it does second-rate Greggs.
2pm: Arsenal v Watford Sky Sports Main Event/Sky Sports Premier League
Another entry on this list if Arsenal v Watford. Yes, Arsenal and Watford both technically fall under the same category when it comes to the nearest urban centre that contains a million people, but what exactly does that mean?
Arsenal have been on both sides of the river, so it’s not as if they’re engrained in one particular area – and Watford has been demoted to the best stop for the Harry Potter exhibit.
But hey, if we want to call it a London derby to aid presenters looking to kill valuable seconds, who are we to deprive them? Luckily away from the noise, we can still punt this game without the usual madcap nature that comes with genuine derbies. Here’s a bet builder.
Arsenal are inconsistent to a fault. We know this. But the thing is, their runs generally come quite consistently in short periods of time. So, when they’re good, they’re very good. And then their bad spells go on far longer than any other half-decent side’s.
Strike when the iron is hot with them, particularly as they don’t appear dependent on one player in particular to save them.
They’re unbeaten in their last seven games and that win over Leicester is about as marquee as their results have been under Arteta. They don’t give me confidence, don’t get me wrong – but back them in the comfort of knowing that if they let you down, you’re safe not to touch them for weeks hereafter.
Nine of their last eleven Premier League goals have come in the first half. It’s now clearly their point of emphasis – hit teams early.
They’re generally better suited to breaking on teams trying to overload them; a shift from the usual slow burn that we’re accustomed to seeing – and it seems to be working for them gradually. If they win, they’ll be winning by the break.
When Watford do come out, they generally create overlaps. Saka is a talented player but he generally operates at a much higher level when he’s not being stood up. He’s netted just twice this year, but his performances have merited a much better return. If Arsenal score early, I expect the space to vacate down his side.
This might seem like a lot – and yes, the Gunners have only done this 19 times since the start of the 2016/17 season, but they managed it in their very last home game against Villa – showing that Mikel’s passages of play are starting to come into effect.
