After finding the back of the net five times at Vicarage Road on Saturday, Liverpool head to Spain looking for another big result in this season’s Champions League. After putting five past Porto last time out and netting three against AC Milan in their opener, Jurgen Klopp’s side have shown their ruthless streak in front of goal so far this term.
WHEN: Tuesday, October 19: 8pm TV: BT Sport
They’ll be up against an Atletico Madrid side currently sitting fourth in the league, three points below league leaders Real Sociedad (who have a game in hand). Atleti beat Barcelona 2-0 last time out where they had just 29% possession, but they could come into this one cold having not played since the international break. Atletico will be almost at full strength, though, only missing Matheus Cunha. Liverpool are set to be without Curtis Jones, Thiago Alcantara and Harvey Elliott.
Liverpool are in flying form and looked dangerous at any given moment against Watford. The Reds have looked fresh and lively and it should help spur them on against a side who haven’t played a competitive game together since October 2nd.
Atletico are renowned for having a fantastic defensive structure under Diego Simeone, and could be just the side to stop Liverpool’s free-flowing attackers. They’ve conceded just seven goals in 10 games all season – and have only conceded more than once on one occasion.
So far so good for Sadio, he’s bagged himself five goals this season in the Premier League with 30 total shots – 11 of which were on target. He’s always reliable for a shot or two so we’re going to back him to have a shot on target here.
Suarez could have a tricky night against the club where he was such a superstar talent. He’s averaging 0.5 goals per game so far this season, but with the support of Joao Felix and Antoine Griezmann, I’d expect to see the Uruguayan remind Liverpool fans he’s still got it.
Atletico play a style focused around a strong defensive platform, giving Liverpool the opportunity to go forward and have multiple opportunities high up the field. This will inevitably lead to chances created and corners generated. Five is the most reasonable mark to expect considering Liverpool will be dominating possession and spending significant portions of the game in the Atletico attacking third.
