Van de Beek explains Airwaves ‘too minty’ after Solkjaer chewing-gum throw

All just a misunderstanding

With videos emerging of Donny van de Beek’s apparent outburst during last night’s fixture with Villarreal, his agent has moved quickly to quash any suggestion that his client attempted to throw his chewing gum at manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer out of frustration.

NEW TO PADDY POWER?

Video footage appears to show the Dutch international being consoled by teammates after yet again missing out on the chance to get onto the pitch and obtain valuable match time.

Van de Beek is then seen aggressively throwing his chewing gum in the direction of his manager and coaching staff. However, his agent, Flinge de Goumm, has attempted to clear up the situation and absolve the player from any wrongdoing.

A statement, released this morning in an effort to dampen social media speculation, reads:

“I am pleased to confirm what happened on the bench at Old Trafford last night was a complete misunderstanding.

“My client, Donny van de Beek was feeling a little paranoid about his breath having eaten curry as his pre-match meal. As we can all appreciate, the smell and taste of onion bhajis, chicken Jalfrezi, Bombay aloo and mango chutney tends to linger on the lips and in the mouth for some time, no matter how many times you clean your teeth and how much water you drink.

“What you were seeing on camera was quite simply Dean Henderson and Eric Bailly reassuring Donny that they couldn’t smell a thing – they are a solid team who offer messages of positive reinforcement whenever possible.

“Regarding the chewing gum incident, Dean Henderson had provided Donny with some to ease his worries further.

“What the camera caught was Donny realising it was an Airwave, which is far too minty and strong for his mouth, so he got rid of it in a very firm and assertive manner.

“It is well known Donny does not like Airwaves – if you look closely you can even read his lips saying “F**k me, that’s hot” in Dutch.

“We hope this clears up the situation.”

And with his explanation putting the controversy to bed, Paddy Power News was granted a quick word with the midfielder to ask what he thought of the game last night.

“To be honest, I wasn’t even watching at the end.”

“I had no idea Fred went on ahead on me, playing in an attacking left-sided role – which I could do – or that he put in a beautiful cross – which I could do – and that he more or less set up the winning goal – which I could do.

“I thought the game had finished 1-1,” he said, before apparently crushing the phone he was speaking on with his bare hands in rage.
