Paddy’s football ambassador Phil Thompson has dialled up the trusty Zoom app to jump on a call with PPTV and our top football trader Jason Murphy to chew the fat over Sunday’s first game. It’s Southampton taking on Wolves at St Mary’s at 2pm ahead of the North London Derby.
But first things first and the lads have put their heads together to try and work out what’s happening between these two. So, without further ado, let’s see what Thommo and Jason think for Sunday’s early match.

THOMMO
It was such a stone-wall penalty from Kyle Walker against Southampton last weekend that it was absolutely amazing that that wasn’t given. But, it will feel like a win for Southampton because they’ve got no win in five Premier League games which is not very good. All told, no win in their last seven.
They’ve conceded six Premier League goals and they’ve all been in the second half of games which is quite interesting. They will feel good but they’ve drawn their last four Premier League games. It’s not looking great for Saints but there are green shoots from last week’s game.
I went for Wolves last week and they did let me down. They’ve had 82 attempts at goal, only Liverpool and Man City have had more so their finishing has been absolutely shocking.
Raul Jimenez has had three in his last three against Southampton so he’s maybe worth a bet. He’s had a shocking start on the goal-scoring front. I’m on Southampton to Win this one.
Wolves, when they’ve scored first they’ve been unbeaten in the last 32 matches, but it’s getting that first goal. I’m going with James Ward-Prowse to Score Anytime. Penalty kicks and free kicks round the box, he’s absolutely first class.
JASON
Jimenez was a goal and assist machine. He was a massive loss after getting that injury last season and a part of their struggles was due to him not being on the pitch. They lost Diogo Jota of course as well.
We’re all about the price here at Paddy Power, of course, and when I look at this price on Southampton to Win it really catches my eye. If you look at the meeting between these two teams last season the season Southampton went off as short as 6/5 with no fans in the stadium, they’re back this weekend.
You could say Danny Ings has gone, Jannik Vestergaard has gone, but their replacements, Adam Armstrong has been fantastic from Blackburn. Mohammed Salisu, they got him last season and he missed most of it through injury but he was a rock for Valladolid the season before.
Southampton have replaced what they’ve sold. So from the price to jump like it has when Wolves have shown no improvement, that price on Southampton to Win looks great for me.
One of the bets of the weekend, you can use it in a Bet Builder, is Southampton to Score the First Goal. It’s a nice price (10/11). The last six times Southampton have met, including in the FA Cup, Southampton have scored the first goal in all six games.
Adam Armstrong has started all five league games so far and importantly stayed on the pitch for all bar the last 20 minutes against West Ham. He has already got the score sheet and has gotten the most of Southampton’s expected goals this season. Armstrong to Score Anytime is your best bet in this market.
