I don’t think there’s anything quite like the rollercoaster of the Irish national football team! It’s been up and down in the last week. Coming off the back of the impressive performance against Portugal, they really needed to back it up with a win against Azerbaijan.

Saturday’s result was incredibly disappointing and we were chasing the game for a large part. It brought us back down to earth.

Stephen Kenny is under pressure now but I’d still back him and I hope the powers that be agree. I understand what he’s trying to do, you have to take all the factors into consideration. You must think about what Stephen is working with and the group he has at his disposal.

We now look ahead to Serbia, who are flying and are in a shootout with Portugal for that automatic place. When you look at the difference between Ireland and Serbia, they have an Aleksandar Mitrovic who can find the back of the net. He’s done it at the highest level for a long time now.

Ireland will come out fighting after the Azerbaijan performance and it’ll help that they’re underdogs going into this one.

I’m going to go for The Draw. Some of our best performances have come when our backs are to the wall. Hopefully that’s the case and I’m confident we can hold Serbia to a draw.

As for a scoreline, I fancy it to finish 1-1. We’re capable of scoring, from both set pieces and open play, and we know Serbia carry a threat with Mitrovic up top.

I think Adam Idah to Score Anytime is a good bet. He’s done really well recently and he’s been unfortunate not to get on the scoresheet.

Alan Cawley’s best bets:

The Draw
Correct Score 1-1
Adam Idah to Score Anytime
