Paddy Power football ambassador and 42-capped England defender Phil Thompson gets the call up to the international stage once again. The first name on our team sheet is giving Hungary v England the treatment ahead of their World Cup qualifier on Thursday.
And Thommo doesn’t think it’s going to be one-way traffic against he side who almost caused an upset or two during the Euros. So, how exactly does the big man think this one’s going to go?
Thursday 7.45pm: Hungary v England
TV: ITV and ITV Hub
Hungary are not a bad side. They got a draw against France and I think they were six minutes away from beating Germany at The Euros. There are no great household names in their squad but they certainly showed a great togetherness. Hungary have made a good start with seven points from three games but yes, England should be qualifying.
I have no doubt that England will win this game but it’s going to be a lot closer than people think. Gareth Southgate has been known to change formation for these kinds of games to get in more attacking players so don’t be surprised if he goes that way. I’m not sure how he’s going to play it, but he does like his two holding midfield players. Does he play it safe?
This is a game that we should go for and show England’s attacking prowess, so it will be a big call whether he goes with one holding midfielder or two. I think Mason Mount and Raheem Sterling will start here for England alongside Harry Kane.

I see Hungary scoring here, but England To Win. They did score against France and got a couple against Germany in the Euros. I’m going for England to Win 2-1 and Raheem Sterling to Score Anytime.
