NEW TO PADDY POWER?
19:45: Barrow v Aston Villa
Sky Sports Main Event/Sky Sports Football
Short-price punt: Barrow +2
It has been an inconsistent start to the season for a Barrow side that appears to have been heavily influenced by the return of fans even at this early stage of the season. Barrow are undefeated at Holker Street in three competitive games so far this season, taking four points from two home league fixtures and knocking Scunthorpe out of the League Cup. Their away record, on the other hand, is less impressive.
Barrow have lost each of their two away fixtures in League Two this season and appear to be struggling with the return of partisan support in hostile venues, so home advantage should spur them on against Aston Villa on Tuesday night.
It should be a highly charged atmosphere, with Barrow fans finally able to enjoy their side taking on big-league opposition again since their promotion to the Football League last season. They will have a chance to claim a huge scalp against what will be a much-changed Aston Villa side.
Villa claimed their first win of the Premier League season with a 2-0 victory over Newcastle on Saturday and Dean Smith is likely to ring the changes against lower league opposition. Like Barrow, Villa are yet to pick up a point on the road this season, although they have only played one game.
Villa will probably have enough to get over the line on Tuesday, but a vocal home support should help Barrow stay within two goals of their opponents.
Value Bet: Aston Villa to Win and Both Teams to Score
Dean Smith is likely to rotate his back four on Tuesday night, giving some of his more inexperienced players a taste of competitive football, which could present Barrow with an opportunity to nab a famous goal against Premier League opposition. The League Two side have scored four goals in three home games this season and will be somewhat confident of causing problems for the Villa defence on Tuesday night.
Villa shipped three goals in their sloppy opening day defeat to Watford and even presented a rather toothless Newcastle side with several gilt-edged opportunities at the weekend. They may prove to be similarly charitable in a less significant game against lower league opposition, especially if Smith does rotate his defence. Villa may need to score twice if they are to progress.
Long(ish) Shot: Jaden Philogene-Bidace to Score First
Teenager Philogene-Bidace clearly made an impression on Dean Smith over the summer by scoring pre-season friendlies against Walsall and Bristol City. The youngster appeared as an unused substitute in Villa’s first game of the season at Watford and has since come off the bench against Newcastle to make just the second Premier League appearance of his career.
A League Cup game against League Two opposition seems like the perfect opportunity to give Philogene-Bidace his first competitive start as a Villa player, and his performances in pre-season have shown that he is ready to seize such an opportunity with both hands. The young winger showed excellent composure in front of goal to finish both of his pre-season goals and is a good outside bet to open the scoring on Tuesday night.
