For Wednesday’s European football Acca we’re going to be taking a look at some of the first legs of the final qualification matches for this season’s Champions League where Benfica host PSV, Malmo play Ludogorets and Young Boys take on Ferencvaros. First up though, Celtic are at home to Dutch side AZ Alkmaar in the first leg of their Europa League qualification match.

7.45pm: Celtic vs AZ Alkmaar: Celtic to Win

Celtic had an awful start to their season, they were knocked out of the Champions League at their first hurdle and lost their opening Premiership match away to Hearts. Since then though, the Bhoys have won all four of their games, exacting revenge on Hearts in the League Cup and winning both of their Europa League matches.

AZ Alkmaar have played just one game so far this season, losing their opening Eredivisie fixture away to Waalwijk. The home side are favourites here but not quite odds-on at the time of writing, their home record is good though, they’re unbeaten over their last 10 competitive matches, winning eight and drawing two, keeping seven clean sheets as well. Alkmaar won just nine of their 17 away games in the league last season and while they averaged 2.12 goals per game the fact remains that Celtic have played seven competitive games this season to Alkmaar’s one. Match fitness should see Celtic taking advantage in the first leg.

8pm: Benfica vs PSV: Over 3.5 Goals

Benfica have won all four of their games this season, two in the league and two in the Champions League, while PSV have won all six of theirs, taking some big scalps along the way. They knocked Galatasaray and Midtjylland down to the Europa League, smashed Ajax 0-4 in the Dutch Super Cup and won their league opener away to Heracles last weekend.

Both teams then are in mighty form, Benfica have scored at least two goals in all of their games so far, PSV have scored a total of 17 over their six games, scoring at least two in five of them. Goals are on the menu here as well then as both sides will obviously be going all out to make it into the Champions League Group Stage. Over 3.5 goals is where our money is going.

8pm: Malmo vs Ludogorets: Both Teams to Score

Malmo are 15 games into their domestic season and currently sit in second position in the Allsvenskan. Ludogorets have only played two games in the Bulgarian top flight but they have won both. Both teams have played six games over their CL qualifiers though, Malmo have won four and drawn two while Ludogorets have won three and drawn three.

The Swedish side have won eight of their last 10 competitive games at home, drawing and losing one apiece while Ludogorets have only won four of their last 10 on their travels, drawing four and losing two. They’re a resilient side though, they scored at least one in nine of those away games and Malmo only kept two clean sheets over those 10 home games mentioned above. Malmo should edge it on form but Ludogorets’ scoring record is hard to argue with, we’re erring on the side of caution here and going with Both Teams to Score.

8pm: Young Boys vs Ferencvaros: Both Teams to Score

Both sides come into this game having played eight games so far this campaign. Young Boys have played four in the CL, winning and drawing two each and have played three in the Swiss Super League, winning one, drawing one and losing one. Ferencvaros have played six CL games so far, winning five and losing one and have played two in the Hungarian top flight, winning one and losing one.

The odds on BTTS look ripe here, Young Boys have kept five clean sheets over their 10 most recent competitive home games but it must be said that over their four CL matches they only managed to keep one. Ferencvaros have scored in eight of their last 10 on their travels and scored at least two goals in five of their six CL games so far this campaign. Add to this the fact that they scored against both Juventus and Barcelona away from home in last season’s CL and against Celtic and Molde in the qualifiers and they should be good for at least one here. Both Teams To Score is the way to go here again.
