Spain and Switzerland scored eight goals between them in their thrilling Last 16 victories over Croatia and France on a manic Monday night at Euro 2020.
After recovering from an early gaffe from goalkeeper Unai Simon, Luis Enrique’s Spain cruised into a 3-1 lead, only to be pegged back to 3-3 after two goals in the final 10 minutes. Chelsea flop Alvaro Morata helped them through 5-3 after extra time.
Switzerland v Spain
Friday, July 2 – 5pm
Saint Petersburg, Russia
ITV/ RTE 2
Switzerland staged a miracle comeback of their own after falling 3-1 down to world champions France before winning on penalties. They’ll be without suspended star midfielder Granit Xhaka for this one, but after their incredible fightback against Les Blues, three-time winners Spain will be wary of the Swiss in Saint Petersburg.
So, what are we tipping for the first of the quarter-finals you ask? Well, we’ve studied the delightful data on Andy Robson’s information-packed cheat sheet to pick out four fab punts that hopefully can score for you.

I think we all saw the frailties of both Switzerland and Spain’s back lines in their respective Round of 16 ties, with each side shipping three goals apiece. Spain’s centre-back pool never looked too convincing without the irrepressible Sergio Ramos and the uncertainty at full-back doesn’t help, neither does their keeper forgetting how to use his feet. With two dangerous attacks we can see a few goals coming in this one and wouldn’t be shocked to see both sides get on the scoresheet.
He’ll be without his usual partner, as Granit Xhaka is suspended after his oddly incredible performance against the French in the Round of 16, so Freuler will be tasked with more responsibility in the heart of the pitch. He’s committing over two fouls a game for his country and was far from a saint for his club side, Atalanta, either. Dealing with one of the breakthrough players of the tournament in Pedri might be a thankless task and could see him throwing in a foul or three in frustration.
The wee winger is used to playing a backup role for Kylian Mbappe and Neymar at PSG but for Spain he’s developed into a real leader and creative force. He’s scored in each of his last two games for his country and is averaging just a bit under two SOT per 90 for Spain and should be able to register at least one against the nation that has faced the most shots on target at Euro 2020.
The Frankfurt player has been one of many wing-backs to shine at these finals and not only has he been a constant threat from crosses, registering a tournament-high four assists, he’s been consistent at hitting the target, averaging 1.25 per 90.
