With phase one of project It’s Coming Home now complete, the Three Lions now look ahead to a match up with Germany, the home of schnitzel, questionable finger smelling and least of all, Timo Werner.
Have England been a joy to watch thus far in the competition? No. But, has it worked? Somehow, it has. Current speculation suggests that Gareth Southgate is actually trying to petition for the removal of goals from the game of football altogether, and instead teams win by highest successful percentage of backwards passes or by merely keeping the ball away from Harry Kane for the longest period of time.
Tuesday 17:00 – England v Germany
BBC One / RTÉ Two
Joachim Low won’t want his last ever game in charge of Germany to be a drab 0-0 affair, so expect Germany to try and drag a win out of this one regardless.
Let’s face it, the football gods are not going to reward us in this one. I’d be shocked to see a high scoring affair, but it could well end 1-1 and then ultimately be decided on penalties.
England are yet to concede a goal, but they’re also yet to come up against a team with the quality going forward that the Germans possess. Under 2.5 Goals is a reasonable enough shout here, as I definitely don’t see either nation scoring more than once.
Kai Havertz has had the 13th most attempts on goal at the tournament, higher than any other player in either side. The Chelsea man had four shots on target in his first three games, expect him to add to the tally at Wembley.
This game likely won’t be won inside of 90 minutes, so let’s go with England to qualify – which is a safer option, that allows us some wiggle room for extra time or (whisper it) penalties.
Joshua Kimmich could well pick up a booking in this game, as a defensive midfielder turned right wing back he’s has found himself caught out in a couple situations so far at the tournament – namely in the game against France where he somehow avoided getting sent off. Coming up against the pace of England’s options out wide, we could well see Kimmich coming to the attention of the referee very early.
