England may not have sparkled in their opening Euro 2020 fixtures but they got the job done to progress to the last-16 stage as Group D winners.
The Three Lions went into last night’s game against the Czech Republic knowing their place in the next round was guaranteed although their final group ranking was far from certain.
Raheem Sterling’s early header was enough to secure all three points and top spot, while Croatia’s 3-1 victory over Scotland ensured the 2018 World Cup finalists leapfrogged the Czechs into second.
While the Scotland team pack their bags and head off on their summer holidays, the England camp will be nervously watching the outcome of Group F.
As a result of topping Group D, Gareth Southgate’s side have guaranteed a fixture against the runners-up from the Group of Death.
The bad news for England? It’s likely to be either France, Germany or Portugal while Hungary are not totally out of proceedings just yet.
The good news? At least they’ll get to play at Wembley.
As the old saying goes, if you want to be the best you’ve got to beat the best so England will have to play some of the continent’s top teams at some point if they want to win the whole thing.
Paddy Power traders reacted to the slightly improved performance against the Czech Republic and progression as Group D winners by trimming England’s odds of winning Euro 2020 to 13/2.
The Three Lions are joint-third favourites with Germany behind France (4/1) and Italy (11/2).
ENGLAND’S EURO 2020 LAST-16 FIXTURE
England vs Group F Runners-Up (France, Germany, Portugal or Hungary)
