Spanish fans won’t be the only ones desperate for goals on Saturday as supporters of the beautiful game across the world pray we’re not subjected to another dour 0-0 draw when Luis Enrique’s men take to the field in Seville.
The goalless outing with Sweden earlier in the week was turgid to say the least – and we’re all hoping Poland will offer a bit more forward desire compared to the defence-minded Swedes.
Spain have beaten Poland in all three of their previous meetings but firepower really is a concern here. What Enrique would do to have Robert Lewandowski in his XI!
Both sides really could do with a win and as fans we’re due a spectacle. Certainly for Poland there’s a feeling of ‘now or never’ after their opening-day defeat to Slovakia. So we’ve analysed the stats with a little help from our pal Andy Robson’s cheat sheet. Here is a four-way acca you can back in Paddy’s Bet Builder…
The Leipzig man looked good against Sweden and had two accurate efforts saved. He averages 1.11 shots on target for Spain and had similar stats with his club this season. He will likely start on the left again and will be encouraged to take on shots against this subpar Polish defence.
He may not have the same impact for his national team as he does for Bayern but Lewandowski is still one of the best players in world football. The striker will be on penalties and free kicks, and will look to get a few shots off on the counter-attack. Remember, Poland will be forced to attack here as their upset against Slovakia means they need a result.
Poland looked a mess in their opener and they’ve now won just once in their last eight internationals – and that victory came against Andorra! The Spanish, on the other hand, have lost just one of their last 25, winning 15 of those. Despite lacking a clinical edge, Spain dominated Sweden and we can’t see past a comfortable win for Enrique’s men.
Glik averages 1.81 fouls per game and will be marking Spain’s most fouled player, Alvaro Morata (3.04 times per match). The Benevento defender picked up 10 yellows and a red in Serie A this season and will struggle to handle the pacey Spanish attack. What’s more, referee Daniele Orsato averaged 5.13 yellows per match this season. Glik will surely go in the book.
