The oldest rivalry in world football writes a new chapter on Friday as England host neighbours Scotland at Wembley in Group D of Euro 2020. These sides haven’t met at a major tournament since Paul Gascoigne made a mockery of Colin Hendry at Euro 96 and slammed home one of the game’s greatest goals… before enacting an equally iconic celebration.
This time Scotland will be hoping for revenge and a morale boost following their humbling defeat to Czech Republic last time out. Steve Clarke’s men need a result here, while Gareth Southgate could implement changes to his XI to keep the England boys fresh.
In order to preview this clash between the historic old rivals we’ve analysed the stats with a little help of a cheat sheet from our pal Andy Robson.

This game is a ‘must not lose’ for Scotland so if they go behind then they’ll be throwing everything forward to chase an equaliser. We reckon they’ll set up to defend but can you really see the Scots keeping England out for 90 minutes? Expect the game to really open up if England score first.
Mateu Lahoz is the man tasked with keeping this game from boiling over. The Spanish ref averaged 4.61 yellow cards per game in La Liga this season and given the rivalry of these two nations, we can see plenty of fouls. It was surprising to see the odds so generous on this and over 3.5 cards could be worth a go at decent odds.
The Aston Villa man was the most carded player in the 2020/21 Premier League season with 12 cautions to his name. He will be in the centre of the park and asked to mark Mason Mount and Phil Foden, which is no easy challenge. McGinn averaged 1.9 fouls per game in the cheat sheet stats, so don’t be surprised to see him taking a yellow for breaking down an England counter.
Mount played just behind Harry Kane in England’s opener against Croatia and he should keep that role here. The Chelsea youngster averaged 0.7 shots on target a match in the lead up to the tournament, so expect him to let fly with some long-range efforts if the Scots defend deep.
