We’re all set for the first blockbuster match of Euro 2020 tonight as Group F rivals Germany and France lock horns in Munich.
France were losing finalists to Portugal on home soil in 2016 before going one better at the World Cup two years later, and Dider Deschamps’ side are widely considered the team to beat at this summer’s tournament.
NEW TO PADDY POWER?
Tuesday 20:00 – Germany v France
ITV/ RTE
Germany have had a rough time of it of late. They bombed at the World Cup despite entering as defending champions, and have been hammered 6-0 by Spain in the Nations League since. A 2-1 reverse at home to North Macedonia in Qatar 2022 qualifying didn’t do much to improve confidence in Joachim Low’s side either.
To preview the blockbuster match between two of Europe’s powerhouse sides we’ve analysed the stats with a little help of a cheat sheet from our pal Andy Robson.
Serge Gnabry 1+ shots on target
Serge Gnabry has enjoyed another good season in the Bundesliga hitting double figures in goals scored for the fifth successive season (not bad for a bloke who couldn’t cut it at West Brom, eh?). Gnabry had 1.6 shots on target per 90mins over the cheat sheet stats and we’re backing him to trouble Hugo Loris at least once in this game.
Antoine Greizmann 1+ shots on target
The Frenchman was the top scorer at the 2016 European Championships and will likely be on penalties and free kicks for his side. He has been played in the No.10 role in the two pre-tournament friendlies and assuming Karim Benzema is fit, will likely fill that hole again here and we can be confident he will find space to get a few shots off.
Over 1.5 goals
Straight in with the stats then… 26 of Germany’s last 28 matches have seen at least two goals scored. On the other hand, the current World Champions have seen multiple goals scored in nine of their last 12. The Germans have struggled defensively which has seen them concede in 11 of their last 14 matches including against lesser sides such as Latvia, North Macedonia and Northern Ireland.
France to win
We’ve already touched on the sub-par German defence and I just struggle to see how they are going to keep the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Greizmann, Benzema and co out. The French have won 16 of their last 20 matches and look the team to beat at Euro 2020. Germany struggle against top nations too – in fact their last win against any of the current FIFA top 15 ranked sides came in March 2017… They are winless in their 13 encounters since then.
