Bayern Munich To Win

Bayern may have left themselves with a mountain to climb following their surprise 3-2 defeat in Germany last week, but it is hard to argue that PSG deserved to come away from the Allianz Arena with anything. The reigning European champions dominated proceedings on Wednesday, peppering Keylor Navas’ goal with a staggering 31 shots in a horrendous display of finishing.

PSG, on the other hand, scored three times from six shots on goal and benefitted from a rare Manuel Neuer mistake to take a significant lead in the tie. One can’t help but wonder how the game would have panned out if Robert Lewandowski was available and Bayern will surely not be so wasteful in front of goal again in Paris. They face a mammoth task to overturn the first leg deficit, but they are rightfully seen as favourites to win on Tuesday night.

They are clearly a superior side to PSG, who have a less than impressive home record in the Champions League. The Parisians were utterly dominated by Barcelona in the Round of 16, while Manchester United fully deserved their 2-1 victory in the group stages.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side were also beaten by Lille in a recent league encounter that could decide the destiny of the French title. In total, they have lost five times in 16 Ligue 1 games at the Parc des Princes and they could easily suffer another defeat on Tuesday night.

Over 3.5 Goals

Goals are guaranteed in Paris if last Wednesday’s game is anything to go by.  PSG’s thrilling win was one of the best Champions League games in recent memory, with both sides committed to an open and expansive style of football that resulted in constant goalmouth action.

Bayern will be forced to open up on Tuesday as they bid to score at least two goals and overturn the first leg deficit, so it should make for an equally compelling game in Paris.

Hansi Flick’s side have scored two or more goals in 17 of their last 19 Champions League ties and are more than capable of netting the two goals they need to qualify, especially if PSG are without Marquinhos at centre-back.

However, their patchy defence stands little chance of keeping out the irrepressible talents of Kylian Mbappe and Neymar and they are almost certain to concede at least once. There should be plenty of goals in this titanic tussle.

Thomas Muller

Thomas Muller To Score Anytime

Bayern will look to Muller in the absence of Robert Lewandowski to haul them back into this tie and the talismanic German is more than capable of doing so. His perfectly placed header drew Bayern level in Germany last week and came at a time when so many of Munich’s attacking players were fluffing their lines in front of goal.

Muller will get chances on Tuesday night; that much is sure. He had five of Bayern’s 31 shots last week and can expect to get a similar number of chances this week. He has shown time and time again that he has the class and the elite mentality to take one of those chances if they come his way.

PSG Over 0.5 goals In The First Half

PSG set up to hit Bayern on the counter from the off last week and there is no reason for them to adopt a different approach on Tuesday considering they hold a somewhat comfortable lead. The pace of Kylian Mbappe is enough to keep any defence honest and Pochettino will be happy to sit in to try to pick them off on the counter.

The tactic was effective against Barcelona in the second leg last month when the Parisians absorbed constant Barcelona pressure in a frenzied first half before winning a penalty on a rare foray forward. They will hope to emulate that success on Tuesday and make Bayern’s task altogether harder.

Their previous record in the Champions League suggests that they are more than capable of scoring early on Tuesday; last year’s beaten finalists have scored first-half goals in each of their last seven games in Europe and another goal inside the opening 45 minutes could send them on their way to a place in the Champions League semi-finals.
