NEW TO PADDY POWER?
Safe Bet: Scotland (-2)
Scotland have come from behind to avoid defeat in both of their qualifying games so far, but they will have to do a whole lot more if they want to secure a place at next year’s World Cup. Top seeds Denmark are unsurprisingly setting the pace at the top of Group F and look in ominous form from Scotland’s perspective.
However, there is no reason why the Scots can’t at least clinch second place and give themselves a chance of reaching their first World Cup in 24 years.
Wednesday 7.45pm: Scotland v Faroe Islands
Sky Sports Main Event
They simply have to brush the Faroe Islands aside on Wednesday night if they harbor serious ambitions of playing in Qatar next winter. The Faroe Islands are not as bad as Moldova and may provide a semblance of a threat to Steve Clarke’s side considering Austria only beat them 3-1. However, the Austrians could have won by a lot more if they had converted just a few of their 27 shots on goal and Scotland should enjoy similar dominance.
Value Bet: Che Adams to score first
Adams has yet to score in his short Scotland career, but he could hardly hope for a better opportunity to open his international account. Since September 2018, the Faroe Islands have kept three clean sheets in 24 competitive games and have kept no clean sheets against a fourth seed or better since their shock 1-0 win over Greece in 2014.
This is an excellent opportunity for Adams to get himself off the mark on the international stage and Clarke will surely turn to the Southampton striker to lead the line once again. The Scots will look for early goals to kill this one off as quickly as possible and Adams, who has scored three in his last four for Southampton, could be the one to get them off the mark.
Long Shot: Adams to score first and Scotland to win 3-0
Scotland have failed to score more than two goals in a game of football since their 3-1 win over Kazakhstan in November 2019, but they have an opportunity to put that right on Wednesday.
The Faroes have conceded at least three goals in each of their last six games against teams League C of the Nations League or higher and are clearly out of their depth in World Cup qualifiers.
Scotland, who have scored just nine goals in their last ten games, should look to put a poor run in front of goal behind them against a side that clearly struggles against competent opponents.
Having said that, Steve Clarke’s side have given little indication that they are capable of scoring more than three and may have to settle for 3-0.
