Phil Thompson was keen to get stuck into another weekend of Premier League action and he’s summoned a double from the depths of his football knowledge for your enjoyment on Saturday. The Kop idol dissects Arsenal’s trip to Burnley and Sheffield United hosting Southampton.
Anything to avoid talking about Liverpool, eh? Take it away, Thommo…
12.30pm: Burnley v Arsenal
I’m favouring Arsenal in this one. Burnley have had a bit of a turnaround haven’t they? They’re lying 15th, so they’re still not clear of that danger area. I think it’s one defeat in the last six Premier League games but the problem with Burnley is that they don’t have enough shots.
They’ve only scored 19 Premier League goals which is not good. The margins are slight, aren’t they, with this side? You look at them and it’s never going to be goal fests for them. Last week’s battering by Spurs would not have helped their confidence.
Saturday 12.30pm: Burnley v Arsenal
BT Sport 1 and BT Sport Ultimate
They were better against Leicester in midweek but Arsenal do enjoy this fixture and they turned things around against Leicester, 3-1. Arsenal have only had two clean sheets in the last eight Premier League games and I think Burnley might take advantage of that.
They’ve won only two of their last six in the Premier League. Back-to-back wins, they’ve only done that three times this season which is very unusual for Arsenal. I’m going for a narrow Arsenal win in this one, though.
3pm: Sheffield United v Southampton
Sheffield United, after their win in the week against Aston Villa, in which they were town to 10 men for a long time, I just think they’ll do well against this demoralised Southampton side who absolutely look shot to bits.
Saturday 3pm: Sheffield United v Southampton
Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Premier League
I think Sheffield United will win this, particularly because they’re playing at home. I’ve got a lovely little double for you involving these two games.
THOMMO’S DOUBLE: So, my double for Saturday is Arsenal to win at Burnley and Sheffield United to beat Southampton.
