It’s been 21 long years since Everton last recorded a win at Anfield back in September 1999. It was a more innocent time where Blue by Eiffel 65 was top of the charts, sending an email made you a computer expert and people still thought a Discman was cool.

On that day a goal from promising young striker Franny Jeffers was enough for the Toffees to nick a 1-0 win and one suspects if Everton are to have any chance of repeating history, they will again be reliant on another young English striker producing the goods.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s fitness is the key question surrounding this fixture with Everton’s attack looking toothless in his absence. Calvert-Lewin has been hugely impressive this term with 18 goals in 25 matches in both league and cup and has been the prolific star striker that many (including myself) doubted he could ever become.

Under Carlo Ancelotti’s guidance, his game has become focused on becoming a penalty box poacher and this can be seen in his statistics. He is getting double the number of shots from the six-yard box that he did last season and you don’t need to be a football nerd to know that the closer you are to goal, the better your chance of scoring.

If he doesn’t play, it’s tough to see Everton having the firepower to trouble even a struggling Liverpool defence. Where this Reds defence is struggling the most without Virgil van Dijk is the forward runs in behind the centre-halves, and that is partly why Liverpool lead the league in penalties conceded. This was a feature of where Liverpool struggled against Leicester and a partnership of Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison could really test the makeshift pairing of Jordan Henderson and Ozan Kabak.

Overall, Everton are hard to trust as a betting proposition and I can see why Liverpool are short odds. Liverpool’s recent results haven’t necessarily reflected some pretty good performances with individual errors by Alisson dooming them against Leicester and Man City.

Mo Salah to Score Anytime

Neither team appeals at current prices to win the match but the selection that does appeal is Mo Salah to score anytime. Salah is having arguably his greatest season in Liverpool colours even if he may not match his 32 goal league goals tally he notched in 2017/18.

His first touch and technique look as good as they ever have, which again is borne out by the statistics with his number of passes and pass completion percentage much improved from previous campaigns. He also comes into the match in good form with five goals from his last five matches.

Richarlison to have 1+ Shots on Target

Leg two will be Richarlison to have a shot on target in the derby. The shot-happy Brazilian averages just over two shots per match and it’s a reasonable price for him to find the target here.

Tom Davies to be carded

Thiago to be carded

Legs three and four will come in the player to be booked markets where Thiago and Tom Davies look likely candidates. Evertonian Davies is always a candidate for a card in such an emotive match and was carded in this fixture last season.

Thiago is averaging 2.4 fouls a game which puts him level with Ashley Barnes in the lead for the most fouls per game in the Premier League. These two should give us a run at a decent price.

Liverpool v Everton betting tips:

Mo Salah to Score Anytime
Richarlison to have 1+ Shots on Target
Tom Davies to be Carded
Thiago to be Carded

A Bet Builder including these four picks pays around 69/1 with Paddy Power.
