Describing this Premier League season as topsy-turvy is certainly an understatement with recent form going out the window on plenty of occasions this campaign. Molineux plays host to one of four league matches on Tuesday with Wolves having failed to win in eight league matches as they edge ever closer to a serious relegation battle. The consistent standard in form from Nuno Espirtio Santo’s side is lacking compared to recent seasons and they return home after defeat to Crystal Palace on Saturday.
Tuesday, 6.00pm: Wolves v Arsenal BT Sport 1/BT Sport Ultimate
The awful injury to Raul Jimenez against Arsenal in late November clearly shocked the entire squad and they’ve been struggling since with only five goals scored in their last six matches. However, the loan signing of Willian Jose should ease those concerns with the Brazilian starting and having two good chances against Palace at Selhurst Park.
The 29-year-old has plenty of experience and scored once in every three games for Real Sociedad since joining the Spanish side in 2016. Jose has scored eight of his last nine competitive goals after the 50th minute and I can see him netting anytime on his home debut.
Wolves have a talented squad and will be determined to show more against the Gunners with Brighton, Burnley and Newcastle just hovering over their shoulder. Santo will be looking for a quick response from his team and I think they’ll start brightly and can score at least one goal in the opening half.
Arsenal have conceded a goal in the first 45 minutes in four of their last six away matches, with at least one goal scored by Wolves in every match they netted in last month.
Arsenal have a good away record at Wolves, winning five of their last six matches at Molineux – including a 2-0 league victory last July. Mikel Arteta has turned things around heading into the second half of the season with finishing in the European places a strong possibility. The Gunners are now nine games undefeated in all competitions following their League Cup loss to Manchester City before Christmas.
Nicolas Pepe and Alexandre Lacazette had the best chances to score against Manchester United on Saturday and look the obvious scorers for the visitors. Arsenal have only conceded twice in their last six-matches, with a total of 13 goals scored on the road and four of those six away games ending in over 2.5 goals. I’d be surprised if Arsenal didn’t score and despite their good recent form, I fancy Wolves to get a result and for this topsy-turvy Premier League campaign to continue into February.
