Derby had looked to have turned a corner following a relatively satisfactory Christmas period, but two successive defeats against sides in the bottom four have cast them straight back into relegation peril.
Wayne Rooney’s side are absolutely in a relegation battle following successive 1-0 losses to Sheffield Wednesday and Rotherham, but they have generally fared better against the better teams in the division this season. The Rams are unbeaten against the current top four in the Championship, winning two and drawing two against Norwich, Swansea, Bournemouth, and Brentford.
Tuesday, 6.00pm: Derby County v Bournemouth Sky Sports Main Event/Sky Sports Football
They were only denied a win at the Vitality Stadium by a late Bournemouth equaliser and have an excellent opportunity to put their recent poor form behind them against the same opposition. Bournemouth have actually struggled themselves in recent games, winning just one of their last five in the league and slipping four points behind Swansea in the race for automatic promotion.
The Cherries desperately need a win on Tuesday to reignite their automatic promotion push, but they could find themselves falling further behind their promotion rivals in what will be a difficult game – despite Derby’s precarious league position.
After a scintillating start to the season, Reading’s season has unsurprisingly slowed down significantly. The Royals came from nowhere to rocket to the top of the Championship table after eight games, winning seven and drawing one in a run that caught everyone by surprise.
Their flying start to the season was eventually brought to an end by Tuesday’s opponents Coventry, who beat them in a 3-2 thriller at the end of October, and their season has been in steady decline ever since.
Tuesday, 6.00pm: Reading v Coventry City Sky Sports Arena
From winning seven of their opening eight games, Reading only managed to win five of the following 15, while they have also lost seven in the same period. They have rebounded well in recent weeks, however, picking up seven points from their last three.
They now have a chance to keep Middlesbrough at arm’s length in the race for the top-six and will seek revenge for their early-season defeat to Coventry.
Coventry have won just three of their last ten league games and look set for a decidedly average season, although there is still a chance that they will be sucked into a relegation battle and will need to string a run of results together sooner rather than later to avoid an immediate return to League One.
