Football tips: Man City to leave Marseille feeling blue in routine Champions League win

We're not expecting much from the visitors in this one.

So long as Manchester City don’t lose this match and Porto beat Olympiakos by five goals they’ll finish top of Group C. So, yeah, that’s not really going to happen so it’s fairly safe to say the Cityzens will finish top of their group and be seeded for the next round.

Marseille though are fighting for a place in the Europa League as both they and Olympiakos sit on just three points. Will they get anything at the Etihad? We’ve had a look through the stats and markets to find the three best bets.

Man City -1

City come into this match without any new injuries, and even Sergio Aguero could make an appearance in the closing stages. It’s a bit of a shock as they’ve been the walking wounded for a few weeks and Pep Guardiola had been making it known he wants more substitutes to be allowed. He loves a good moan does Pep.

Anyway, Marseille are pretty bad, actually worse than bad, they’ve lost four out of their five Champions League matches so far, and only one of them was by a goal, all others were by two or more so this bet would have won in them. The three points they did win was a home win over Olympiakos.

City have been in strong home form of late, indeed in four out of their last five at the Etihad they won by two goals meaning this bet would have won in four of them.

While we should see Guardiola rotating some of his players here with City in the Manchester derby away at Old Trafford on Saturday, this team will have more than enough to brush a Marseille side who are terrible on the road in European competition.

Marseille Under 0.5 Goals

Marseille have failed to score in both of their away Champions League matches so far this campaign and also failed to score in three of their six away Europa League matches the last time they were in European competition. City have now kept four out of five clean sheets in their most recent five matches, and at home have kept their opponents scoreless in three out of their last six.

Their Champions League record of clean sheets isn’t good though and it’s only fair to mention that, but this Marseille side isn’t exactly full of goals. They’ve only scored in three of their last five away matches and have only scored two in their five in the competition. Both Teams to Score: No is another option but we’re getting higher odds here on backing Marseille to not score.

Man City HT/FT

Man City have been winning at half-time in three out of their last five home matches and have scored at least one before the break in four out of their last six home Champions League matches.

Looking at their five most recent home matches again, they’ve netted eight first half goals and it’s hard not to see the same happening again. There’s very decent odds here considering their strength at home particularly in the first half of matches, we’re backing Man City to Win at HT and FT.
