Rangers have been flawless in the league over the past six games, winning all six and conceding just one goal. But, they may find the going tough against Aberdeen on Sunday. Steven Gerrard’s side squeezed by The Dons on the opening weekend of the season thanks to a Ryan Kent strike and could be in for a similarly close battle on Sunday.
Aberdeen are arguably the in-form team in the league after Rangers, having lost just once since that opening day defeat and they can certainly cause problems for Gerrard’s men. The Gers will still expect to win, however, given their perfect home record.
The league leaders have played seven times at Ibrox in the league this season, scoring 24 and conceding none on their way to seven home wins. That record will fall eventually – and they might even concede their first home league goal on Sunday – but they should continue their marvellous home record in this one.
There are few right backs in world football that consistently find the back of the net as often as Rangers’ James Tavernier. The Rangers captain may take penalties, but he contributes several goals from other areas too.
With eight goals in 14 league games this season, Tavernier not only finds himself top-scorer at Rangers, but also in the Scottish Premiership – a staggering statistic for a right back, regardless of whether he takes penalties or not.
He has scored at least double the amount of league goals as any other player in the Rangers squad and also leads the club’s scoring charts in all competitions with 12 goals, a tally that is five goals higher than the second-most prolific player in the Rangers squad. Tavernier has scored six goals in his last six league games and nine goals in his last 11 games in all competitions. He is excellent value to find the back of the net again on Sunday.
Rangers are averaging almost three goals a game this season at the 14-game stage and have scored at least twice in each of their seven home games since August. It stands to reason that they will do so again against an Aberdeen side that has conceded five in its last three league games.
Aberdeen, meanwhile, could be the team to finally end Rangers’ home clean sheet streak given their potency in front of goal. Derek McInnes’ side have scored the third-most goals in the Scottish Premiership this season, despite playing fewer games than most clubs.
They have failed to net away from home just once this season and they boast an excellent away record, winning three of their four games on their travels and drawing the other. They will likely taste away defeat for the first time on Sunday, but they should strike a blow of their own, requiring Rangers to score at least twice if they are to win.
