Football tips: Our 8/1 Same Game Multi as red-hot Bayern Munich tackle underdogs Lyon

Surely there's only one winner here?

bayern-lyon

It’s Lyon versus Bayern Munich in the Champions League semi-final. All of the English sides have fallen by the wayside. Bayern won the league, while Lyon fell short in Ligue 1.

But that’s enough reminiscing about 2009/10, we’ve got a game in 2020 to worry about.

Ten years ago, the French side were given a 41 per cent chance of reaching the final by bookmakers, but lost both legs to nil and 4-0 on aggregate. Paddy thinks Rudi Garcia’s team have a much smaller chance this time around, so do they have any hope at all?

We’ve been here before, of course. Lyon weren’t given any realistic chance of beating Juventus or Manchester City, yet were never behind overall in either tie and so have made it through to their second-ever Champions League semi-final.

There’s no doubt their goal led a charmed life in those games though. Juventus missed all five of their non-penalty clear-cut chances in the last 16 tie, before City squandered three on Saturday night. Raheem Sterling will still be thinking about his 86th-minute miss in that match now, regardless of when you’re reading this.

Bet: Bayern Munich -2

Bayern are certainly unlikely to be as charitable as Juve. Their goal scoring record this season in Europe has been frankly ridiculous, and they will surely set a new high watermark for the Champions League despite having fewer games than teams who usually reach this stage.

Liverpool scored 41 Champions League goals in 2017/18, but did so by bagging at least five against European dross like Maribor, Spartak Moscow, Porto and Manchester City.

(-2)

Bayern put seven past last season’s finalists in the space of 73 minutes, scored seven across two games against the Premier League’s fourth-best team, and then kept scoring against Barcelona long after the Simpsons’ ‘stop, stop, he’s already dead’ meme had long since outlived its use.

So while Lyon have only lost two league or European games by more than a single goal twice this season – and even then, by only two – this could be the night that record comes crashing down.

Bet: Both teams to score

The German champions have scored at least three goals in all-but-one of their Champions League matches this season, and failed to score at all in just one of their 34 Bundesliga matches in 2019/20.

I think we can assume that Bayern will get on the score sheet here. Maybe even more than once, you never know.

But for all their undoubted power up front, they’re far from infallible at the back. They conceded at least twice in almost a third of their league games, and in three of their European matches this season. As Lyon have scored in eight of their nine Champions League matches, they will carry realistic hopes that Manuel Neuer can beaten at least once.

And while there haven’t been one-legged semi-finals since 1994, both teams have scored in four of Bayern’s last six matches in this round, including the last three in a row.

Bet: Robert Lewandowski to score at least two goals

At Bayern, they have Robert Lewan-goal-ski. I hope he’s also the funny one, as Thomas Muller’s comic delivery left plenty to be desired the other night.

The Pole has earned his nickname too. Lewandowski has played 39 matches in the Bundesliga and Champions League in 2019/20, and only failed to score in six of them. With 48 goals in total, it’s a shame there’s no Ballon D’or this year as he was a shoe-in to finish second behind whichever one of Messi and Ronaldo wore the weirdest suit in order to win it.

Lewandowski has been lethal in this tournament, arriving at the match with 14 goals in it this season, the same total as Lyon. Bayern’s number nine has also had at least two shots on target in all of his European games, with an average of 3.6.

So do you look at him to score, or to have a certain number of on target goal attempts? He has to have a chance of scoring at least twice, having done so in 15 matches this season, including four times in the Champions League. That’s the final bet for our Multi sorted then.
