We have been spoilt in the past few weeks with the football coming thick and fast, and it continues this midweek with another set of fixtures. The game that catches my eye is Sheffield United v Tottenham – a match that is of huge importance to both in the race for European football.
A defeat for either side will leave them just out of reach of a top 5 spot which looks to be enough for a Champions League spot this season – depending of course on the outcome of Manchester City’s appeal against their ban.
The break in football that some thought may have come at a good time for the small Sheffield squad looks to have had the opposite effect, as they have lost both their league games so far to Newcastle and Man Utd 3-0.
Spurs were on an awful run of form before lockdown, which had much to do with missing Harry Kane and Heung-min Son, but have taken 4 points out of 6 since the return of football. The suspension of the league couldn’t have come at a better time, as it allowed their key players time to recover from injuries and give them some fresh impetus for the end of the campaign.
The first bet I like is Tottenham to win. It’s a fairly straightforward one, but Tottenham have came back from the break a much better team and look a lot fitter than the Blades.
You can’t read into their form before the break too much due to the absence of their key players, but with a full squad now available they are showing glimpses of what they can actually do.
Sheffield United have been solid at home with only 1 loss in their last 11 league home games, but it’s hard to ignore their very poor return after the break and home advantage clearly not being the same as pre-lockdown due to having no fans, I really fancy Tottenham to get the win here.
Keeping on the same theme, United have failed to score in their two leagues games after lockdown. They don’t usually fire in many anyway, but they are struggling more than usual to find the net. The Blades are the 15th in the league for goals scored, so with that being said a Tottenham clean sheet looks a safe bet – particularly with Jose Mourinho in the opposition dugout!
Bergwijn signed for Tottenham in January and has shown some great potential in the games he’s played so far. The break looks to have helped him bed in with his new team-mates after only joining halfway through the campaign.
Bergwijn has 3 goals in 7 games for Tottenham and since the league restarted he’s hit 1 in 2. I fancy him to cause a lot of problems for Sheffield United and think he will get on the scoresheet.
