Next Watford manager betting: Chris Hughton now odds-on favourite

He’ll have a heck of a job on his hands!

Paddy Power have this morning made Chris Hughton odds-on (4/9) to be named next Watford manager, as the former Brighton boss heads a queue of domestic contenders for the vacancy.

We reported big overnight interest in Sam Allardyce, who has moved into 7/2 second favourite, while Paul Clement (remember him?) is 6/1.

Any of the trio would mark a step-change from the usual Watford model of hiring managers only Google has ever heard of, which explains why former Real Betis coach Quique Setien is next in the betting (12/1).

Or the club could repeat the trick of their last appointment – because that went so well – of bringing back a former manager, with Slavisa Jokanovic priced at 14/1.

Asked about the Watford situation spokesman Paddy Power said: “All the momentum seems to be with Chris Hughton, which was reportedly the direct opposite of his playing style at Brighton.

“The Ireland legend would surely jump at the chance of Premier League rehabilitation after his brutal sacking on the south coast – and, with the alternative seemingly Big Sam, it might be similarly welcomed by Watford fans.”
