Football under floodlights is just the best and knockout footie even more so. Sure, it’s the League Cup and you can dismiss it at your will, but over the past few seasons, the bigger teams have been taking it seriously again.
It’s the first piece of serious silverware on offer, a good chance to blood new players into the squad and the momentum of a good cup run sets up teams nicely for the final stretch of the season.
Looking at the Tuesday night fixtures there are two all-Premier League clashes as an improving Everton welcome Watford to Merseyside, while Manchester City will probably stuff Southampton at the Etihad.
But, for our treble, we’re going to look at the matches involving the Premier League sides.
Everton vs Watford: Everton to Win – 8/13
While Everton’s season has been a bit of a shambles, their form at Goodison Park has been quite good. The Toffees have only lost two of their previous 10 matches there.
They put in a fairly good display against an out-of-sorts West Ham in their most recent home match, winning 2-0 and were unlucky to lose 3-2 away to Brighton & Hove Albion at the weekend.
Watford’s away form is pretty dire, they’ve not won on the road since last April and have conceded 13 goals over their last five away from Vicarage Road.
The visitors aren’t fancied much by anyone here and with them rock bottom of the Premier League table they’ll be more concerned with the visit of Chelsea on Saturday. Everton have never lost to Watford at home, so we’re putting an Everton victory into our top treble.
Manchester City vs Southampton: Man City (-2) – 10/11
City love this competition, they’ve appeared in four of the last six finals and have won it every time.
Manager Pep Guardiola likes to freshen up the side and rotate the squad for these League Cup games, so we’re likely to see Phil Foden get a run out again after his fine display against Atalanta in the Champions League last week.
City have scored 10 goals in their last three matches in all competitions, conceding just one and you’d expect them to bag a few more against an out-of-sorts Southampton here as well.
It was a nice gesture for the Saints players to donate their wages to charity following their 0-9 defeat to Leicester on Friday night, they’ve likely to be in for another thrashing here though. City are in such great goal scoring form that we’re sticking them (-2) at 10/11 into our betslip.
Burton vs Leicester: Leicester to Win to Nil – 5/4
Burton’s home record on paper looks decent, they’ve undefeated at home in their last four League One matches, winning eight points from a possible 12.
The thing is they’re not scoring many goals, of those four matches, they’ve only scored three – two of which were in the same game against Bristol Rovers. They’ve also only hit the back of the net twice in their last three matches in the league.
Contrast this to Brendan Rodgers’ Foxes and they’ve netted 21 times in their last five matches.
They’re on an incredible goal-scoring streak and the prospects of having a good Cup run will mean Rodgers’ team will be fired up for the occasion. The Northern Irishman is likely to rest some key players though and rotate the squad, so a few will be out to impress to try and squeeze their way into his usual starting XI.
Leicester have kept three clean sheets in five of late and with Burton not scoring much at home we’re tipping Leicester to win to nil in this tie.
